About WP Grid Builder Map Facet Addon

The WP Grid Builder buyer who wants a map that filters, not a decorative one

Putting a map with pins on a page is easy. The hard part is letting visitors move the map, see the list of results change, and reach the shop, property or event they want. This add-on solves that, but only if you already work with WP Grid Builder: it is an add-on and does not work on its own.

It is also not for you if you just want a standalone map with four fixed points for a contact page. And it needs latitude and longitude coordinates for each item: if your posts do not have them, the map will have nothing to show.

A map that is one more facet of your filtering

Map Facet Addon turns the map into a WP Grid Builder facet. You create a new facet, choose Filter as the action and Map as the filter type, and from there you pick the map type and fine-tune the behavior of the map, markers, clusters and controls.

  • Three providers: Google Maps, Mapbox or Leaflet (the latter is open source).
  • Markers for posts, terms or users: they are placed from coordinates.
  • Filtering when panning the map: this is optional, so you can choose whether moving the map changes the results or not.
  • Marker clustering: the map supports grouping markers.

Markers with cards, custom icons and clusters by size

You can assign different icons and content to markers based on conditions, and show a card as the popup content. Cluster icons can change according to their size, and with Google Maps you can control the clustering radius. If you place several maps on the same page, that is covered.

For further customization there are PHP filters (marker content, geoJSON, Leaflet tile providers, Mapbox styles) and JavaScript events (click and hover on markers). That requires touching code: without technical knowledge, you will stick to the panel settings.

Search by location and sort by distance with the Geolocation facet

It includes a Geolocation facet to search for a place using the Google or Mapbox APIs. It can also detect the visitor's location with the browser's geolocation API, which is sometimes approximated from the IP, so do not expect street-level accuracy in every case.

To sort by distance you need a sort facet (Order by > Distance) or ordering by included posts. Distance ordering only works when the content is filtered with the Geolocation facet. There is also a shortcode to display each post's distance, with configurable unit, decimals, prefix and suffix.

How to load coordinates without doing it by hand

It is compatible with the map fields from ACF (Google Map and OpenStreetMap) and Meta Box (Google Maps and Open Street Map). If you use neither, the add-on offers its own coordinate fields for posts, users and terms, editable from the grid settings in preview mode.

If you store latitude and longitude in two different custom fields, a PHP filter lets you tell the indexer which ones to use.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work without WP Grid Builder?

No. It is an add-on that adds the map facet and the geolocation facet to WP Grid Builder.

Can I use it without paying for a maps API?

Leaflet is open source. Some tile providers for Leaflet require an API key, and there is an optional field to add it.

Can I sort results by proximity?

Yes, but only when the content is filtered with the Geolocation facet.

Does it show users and categories as well as posts?

Yes, markers can represent posts, terms or users.
