About WP Manga FTP/SFTP Storage

Getting chapter images off the WordPress server

A manga site accumulates weight at a rate no other kind of website matches. A chapter is thirty or forty images; a hundred chapters is already thousands of files. Within months the hosting is tight on disk, backups take forever, and the only way out on offer is paying for a bigger plan.

This extension breaks that cycle: chapter images stop being stored on your server and move to external storage over FTP or SFTP. WordPress still manages chapters the same way, but the heavy files live somewhere else.

How it works

You configure the external server's credentials from its own panel in the WordPress dashboard: host, port, username, password and storage path. From then on uploads go straight there.

Recent versions add private key authentication for SFTP, which is the right approach when the destination is your own server and you would rather not keep passwords in the database.

What it solves day to day

  • Batch upload: several chapters at once, with automatic unzipping on the remote server. On a site publishing daily, that is the difference between twenty minutes and two.
  • Automatic cleanup: deleting a chapter in WordPress removes the files from the external server too. Without that you end up paying to store images for chapters that no longer exist.
  • Formats: the usual image types plus WebP.

With a CDN

It works with CDN services that offer FTP access, and the documentation gives BunnyCDN as an example. That turns the disk saving into something more: images get served from the point nearest the reader, which on a manga site with an international audience shows on every page.

Who it is for

Manga and novel sites with high publishing volume, hosting with limited disk, and any project where upgrading the hosting plan costs more than renting external storage, which is nearly always.

It is compatible with the WP User Upload PRO plugin for SFTP operations.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own server?
Not necessarily. Any destination with FTP or SFTP access works, including CDN services such as BunnyCDN.

What about chapters I already uploaded?
The extension handles external storage for what is uploaded through it. For existing material it is worth checking the documentation rather than assuming it migrates itself.

Are files deleted when I remove a chapter?
Yes, it cleans up on the external server automatically, which is what stops you paying for accumulated junk.

Does it support WebP?
Yes, alongside the usual image formats.
