About WP Staging Pro
Updating plugins while the store is open: that is the real risk
Updating a plugin straight on production is a gamble: if something fails, your customers see it before you do. Testing on a copy is the sensible route, but it has a problem: while you test, the real site keeps receiving orders, comments and sign-ups. If you then push the whole copy, all of that is lost. WP Staging Pro covers the full cycle: clone, test, and send back to production only what should go.
From clone to test: three steps with WP Staging Pro
Step 1, clone. You create the copy from a button, in a subfolder (mysite.com/staging-site), on a subdomain such as dev.mysite.com or in a path you choose. You can decide which tables and folders to copy. Everything stays on your server and nothing is sent to third parties. If you want full isolation, it can use a separate database (with an optional SSL connection); if it shares the database, its tables carry the wpstg_ prefix so they never mix with the real ones.
Step 2, keep it quiet. A copy of a store can email real customers or fire scheduled tasks. You can stop the copy from sending emails or running the WordPress cron, and pause subscription renewals, webhooks and other queued WooCommerce tasks.
Step 3, control who gets in. By default only administrators have access. You can open it to specific roles or users, enter already logged in, copy your own login or create a separate administrator. Since it requires authentication, it is not exposed to the public or to Google.
To move faster, new or refreshed copies can update their outdated plugins and report the result, so you see what breaks before touching production.
Common questions before cloning your site
- Do I need technical skills? Creating the copy is a button click; the plugin does the rest.
- Does it work on WordPress.com? It can back up and migrate those sites to another server, but it cannot create a staging copy on the same server because of the platform's limitations.
- I already have a copy made with the free version, do I lose it? No: when you install WP Staging Pro, the free version is deactivated and the existing copy is detected automatically.
- Can my client change the copy and can I push their changes? Yes: the client edits plugins or posts on the copy and the administrator pushes the result with the push feature.
Pushing changes without overwriting new orders
This is the part that matters most in a store. Push copies what you tested to production and lets you choose which tables and folders go. You can exclude the WooCommerce tables so orders received while you were testing are not overwritten. In addition, by default a backup of the live database, plugins, themes and uploads is made first, so you can go back.
Mind what you need: push, flexible schedules and cloud backups are in the higher Pro levels, not all of them. If push is your reason to buy, confirm your level includes it.
Backups that live where you decide
Beyond staging copies, WP Staging Pro makes full or partial backups (only the database, plugins, themes or uploads), with compression and rules to leave out logs, cache and revisions. You can also restore on another domain or server, and URLs, paths and the database prefix are adjusted automatically.
- External destinations: Google Drive, Amazon S3, Dropbox, OneDrive, pCloud, FTP and SFTP, DigitalOcean Spaces, Wasabi and S3-compatible storage.
- Multisite support: clone networks or subsites, or turn a subsite into a standalone site.
- Email alerts when a backup fails.
A practical warning: if you do not set up an external destination, the backup is stored on the same server it protects, and that does not cover you if that server goes down.
