About WPCodeBox 2 WordPress Plugin
For people who maintain several sites with custom code, not for people who don't touch code
A snippet that fixes something on a site often ends up pasted into the theme's functions.php, with no name, no date and nobody remembering why it is there. When you switch themes or hand over the project, that code gets lost or breaks something. WPCodeBox 2 is there to take it out of that file and treat it as what it is: a part of the project that needs organizing.
It fits if you are a developer, freelancer or agency and repeat the same tweaks across many sites. It is not for you if you don't write or understand code: it is a snippet manager, not a catalog of features with switches to turn on.
- Yes: store CSS, JS, SCSS, LESS and PHP in one place, with folders.
- Yes: reuse snippets across sites through your cloud account.
- No: it doesn't excuse you from reviewing what you paste, even if you use the library of tested snippets.
WPCodeBox 2 and code that survives a theme change
The most useful feature for anyone delivering sites to clients is the functionality plugin mode: your snippets are saved in a separate plugin and run from there, not from the database or from inside WPCodeBox. That makes handing the site over to the client simpler.
If you would rather a piece of code not depend on WPCodeBox at all, you can turn selected snippets into a standalone plugin. And with the condition builder you decide where and when each snippet runs, instead of loading it on every page.
An editor that saves you from googling hooks
The editor suggests WordPress actions, hooks and functions based on context, and shows their documentation when you hover over them. When you add a filter, it generates the anonymous function with the correct parameters and return types. It also offers JavaScript, CSS, SCSS and HTML suggestions, with Emmet support.
- SCSS and LESS are compiled to CSS, and SCSS partials are supported.
- CSS changes show up on the frontend without reloading the page.
- You can add external JS and CSS, and include libraries through the cdnjs integration without installing another plugin.
An error in a snippet shouldn't lock you out of the admin
WPCodeBox detects most errors and disables the snippet that causes them. Mind the word "most": if one slips through, the advantage is that you can still get into WPCodeBox to fix it. Even so, test code in a staging environment before taking it to a live site.
Other pieces built for repetitive work: quick actions in the admin top bar to run a snippet with one click, insertion points at WooCommerce hooks (only when WooCommerce is active), a secure URL to trigger a snippet from an external service such as Zapier, and an API key manager with limited access to your cloud account for your clients' sites.
Questions before installing WPCodeBox 2
Does it work with Elementor, Bricks or Oxygen?
It is 100% compatible with any plugin and theme, so your page builder is not an obstacle. What you add depends on your code, not on the builder.
Can I hand over the site without the client depending on it?
Yes: with the functionality plugin or by creating standalone plugins from your snippets.
Is it useful if I don't code?
Only if you stick to copying snippets from the library and understand what they do. If you want to add features without code, another type of plugin will suit you better.
