About wpDataTables Tables and Charts Manager
A table pasted into a page is outdated the next day
People who publish price lists, catalogs, results or statistics usually start by copying a table into the editor. It works until the first change: the data lives in an Excel file or a database, the website keeps a dead copy and someone has to remember to rebuild it. On mobile it also overflows, and visitors can't sort or search anything. wpDataTables solves exactly that: the table starts from a data source (Excel, CSV, Google Sheets, MySQL, JSON or XML) instead of being pasted text.
From a price-list spreadsheet to a table visitors can sort and filter
Imagine you have a sheet with products, references and prices. The walkthrough would be this:
- Choose the source: you upload the Excel or CSV file, or connect a Google Sheets document. If the data is in a database, you can use the MySQL query generator, which saves you from writing SQL by hand.
- Define the columns: you set whether each one is text, number, link, date or image. That way a price column sorts as numbers rather than letters, and a photo column shows the image.
- Give visitors tools: filtering, sorting and pagination, built on the DataTables library.
- Group and check on mobile: you can group rows by category so the list reads better, and the tables are responsive.
- Allow downloads: export to PDF, CSV, Excel or copy to the clipboard.
One limit to keep in mind: for large tables coming from MySQL there is server-side processing, but that advantage belongs to that source. If your source is a huge Excel file, test in the demo how it responds before committing to it.
Common questions before building your first table with wpDataTables
Do I need to know SQL?
Not for the basics. There is a table constructor in the admin area and a MySQL query generator (plus another for the WordPress database) designed so you don't have to write code.
Can visitors edit the data?
Yes, there is front-end editing, aimed at MySQL-based tables. You can also create editable tables from Excel or CSV. Check in the demo how it works with your type of source and what permissions you need.
Is it good for more than tables?
Yes: it generates charts linked to the table data.
Is it worth it for a ten-row list?
It will work, but its value shows when there is a lot of data, it changes often or visitors need to search and sort.
Charts that come from the same table, with Google Charts or Highcharts
Once the table is published, you can create a chart from it with Google Charts or Highcharts. The practical advantage is that table and chart share data: you don't maintain two versions of the same figure. It's useful for price comparisons, sales trends or sports results.
What you won't find is a business analysis or reporting tool: it is meant to present data on your website, not to replace a spreadsheet or a data dashboard.
Columns, formats and export: what decides whether the table reads well
Column types matter more than they seem. Links are clickable, dates sort by date and images appear as images. For a product catalog or a directory, that is the difference between a table people consult and one they abandon. Export to PDF, Excel or CSV suits anyone who wants customers to take away the price list or the results list.
