About WPML CMS Navigation Addon
When the menu doesn't know which language you're in
Building a multilingual site often leaves a problem you don't notice until the end: a visitor lands on a page in German and has no idea where they are in the structure, which sections surround it or how to get back. WPML CMS Navigation Addon offers three navigation elements designed for sites translated with WPML.
Breadcrumbs, dropdown menu and sidebar
- Breadcrumbs: helps visitors find their way through the site's structure.
- Dropdown menu: gives quick access to specific sections of the site.
- Section sidebar: shows the pages related to the one being viewed.
Each element is placed with a one-line PHP function in the theme files: breadcrumbs go in header.php or in templates such as single.php, page.php, archive.php, tag.php and search.php; the dropdown menu goes in header.php; and the sidebar goes in sidebar.php. The sidebar also exists as a widget, so you can add it from the Widgets screen without touching code.
Settings you do have at hand in WPML CMS Navigation Addon
Under WPML → Navigation you'll find the global settings, such as the symbol that separates the steps of the breadcrumb trail. In addition, when editing a page a block called CMS Navigation appears where you can decide what happens with the sidebar:
- Exclude the current page.
- Show or hide its child pages.
- Assign a section under which the page will appear.
The look is changed with CSS. The plugin ships with two stylesheets: one responsible for how the dropdown menu works, which you shouldn't touch, and another that you can copy to your theme and modify as you like.
Deciding whether editing your theme files is worth it
Here is what you should know before choosing it: it doesn't just activate and work on its own. You have to paste the PHP functions into the theme templates, and if you use a theme you can't edit or a page builder that doesn't give access to those files, you'll need a child theme or help from someone who knows how. For the sidebar, though, the widget spares you that step. And of course, it is an add-on: it needs WPML installed to work.
Does it work without WPML?
No. It is a WPML add-on and is designed for multilingual sites built with it.
Do I need to know how to code?
For breadcrumbs and the dropdown menu you have to paste one line of PHP into the relevant template. For the sidebar, the widget is enough.
Can I change the design?
Yes, with CSS: copy the editable stylesheet to your theme and customize there. It's best to leave the dropdown menu's base stylesheet untouched.
Can I control which pages appear in the sidebar?
Yes, from the CMS Navigation block in each page's editor: exclude it, show or hide its child pages and assign it a section.
