About WPML SEO Multilingual
Translating a site is not the same as ranking it in another language
Many multilingual sites end up with translated pages whose title in Google is still in the original language, with an untouched meta description or hreflang tags nobody has checked. The content is in French, but the search engine still sees a half-finished site. WPML SEO Multilingual is the bridge between WPML and your SEO plugin (Yoast SEO or Rank Math) so those fields travel with each translation.
One idea worth having clear before you start: if your SEO in the original language is weak, translating it does not fix it, it multiplies it. First optimize titles, descriptions and slugs in the base language and then translate.
SEO fields travel inside the same translation job as the content
WPML SEO Multilingual adds the Yoast SEO or Rank Math fields to each post's translation job. There is no separate screen or different workflow: from the WPML translations panel you choose the method, and the SEO title, meta description or Facebook description appear as labelled rows next to the body text.
- Manual translation or by a translator on your team: each field is edited in the Advanced Translation Editor. Character limits are not enforced there, so you need to keep titles under about 60 characters and descriptions under about 160, because Google truncates the overflow.
- Automatic translation with PTC: respects the length limits of each field and applies your glossary (brands, product names, keywords per market).
- External translation service: receives the SEO fields together with the post.
Leave placeholders such as %%title%%, %%sep%% and %%sitename%% as they are: they expand on their own in the target language, and PTC already preserves them untouched.
Categories, tags and hreflang without manual work
Taxonomies (categories, tags and custom taxonomies) have their own SEO: title, meta description, focus keyphrase, breadcrumb title and social data. The plugin adds it to the term's translation job, with both Yoast SEO and Rank Math. With Yoast SEO you can also send the SEO of all terms at once from the translations panel. If you type a value in a translated term yourself, WPML keeps yours. The primary category of each post also syncs with its translations.
WPML SEO Multilingual generates the hreflang tags. If your SEO plugin's sitemap is on, it adds one entry per translation plus an x-default in the XML sitemap. If it is off, it places them in the head of each page. A page that shows the original content because it has no translation yet does not appear in the sitemap and, with Yoast SEO, its canonical points to the original. The URL and slug settings are at WPML → Settings → URLs and SEO and normally do not need touching.
What to decide before installing WPML SEO Multilingual
The core decision is whether your URL structure and keywords are ready for several markets. Use subfolders (example.com/es/) or subdomains; avoid ?lang= parameters, which Google handles worse. And do not translate keywords literally: what an English speaker searches as sneakers, a German speaker searches as Turnschuhe. Review each market with Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, Semrush or Google autocomplete, and put those terms in the glossary.
Does it work with All in One SEO?
There is no integration with All in One SEO. WPML only translates its fields as custom fields, without the specific handling Yoast SEO and Rank Math get.
Does it work without WPML?
No. It is a WPML add-on: you need WPML active and Yoast SEO or Rank Math installed.
Do I have to set up hreflang by hand?
In most cases no. If you turn on the sitemap later, turn off the option to show alternative languages in the head section yourself to avoid duplicate tags.
How do I check that it worked?
Open a translated page, view the source and search for hreflang, title and meta description. Checking one translated page is enough, because it works the same on all of them. Also check that no menus, sidebars or footers remain in the original language.
