About WPML Sticky Links Addon

You reorganize the menu, change a page slug or move a page under a different parent, and suddenly half your site links to a 404. On a multilingual site the problem multiplies: every page exists in several languages and every internal link is one more piece that can break without anyone noticing.

Why a link breaks even if you never touch it

A normal link stores the address as it was the day you wrote it. If you later change the slug, the page parent or the permalink structure, that stored address no longer exists. WPML Sticky Links Addon changes the approach: instead of storing the URL, it stores the page number, which never changes no matter what. When the page is displayed, it inserts the permalink that is current at that moment.

Walkthrough: renaming a page without breaking anything

Step 1: you link as usual

You insert the link in the block editor or the classic one. If you open the link in the editor you will see an address with ?page_id= instead of the permalink. That is normal: your visitors never see it, because it is replaced when the page is displayed.

Step 2: you change the target page address

You edit the slug, move the page or rethink the site permalinks. All the pages that linked to it update by themselves and point to the new address.

Step 3: you decide what becomes a sticky link

On the WPML → Sticky links screen you choose which content is processed. By default the links in the body of posts are handled, and you can add those in widgets and strings.

Step 4: you rescue the old content

If you enable it on a site that is already published, existing links are not converted on their own. The screen tells you how much content may contain normal links, and the scan button converts them in batches. It also reports broken links that already exist and helps fix them. And if you change your mind, there is an option to return everything to normal permalinks.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work without WPML?

No. It is a WPML add-on and needs the main plugin installed.

Does it protect links to external sites?

No. It works with links between pages and posts on your own site.

Does it convert old links automatically?

No: you have to run the scan from its settings screen, and it is reversible.

What if I want to link to a page in another language?

This is the most annoying limit: since the add-on adjusts links to the language of the page, it may replace your link with the same-language one. To avoid it you need to add a filter to the theme's functions.php file, listing the slugs of the pages you want to be able to link to. It requires touching code.

Links inside shortcodes: another functions.php tweak

If a shortcode generates links of the ?page_id= type, by default the add-on does not process them and your visitors would see that address as is. To have it convert them you need to add a small snippet to functions.php. If you work with a page builder or plugins that generate links through shortcodes, check how they look on a test page before considering the site finished.

Who gets the most out of WPML Sticky Links Addon

If several people edit and move pages, it keeps every reorganization from turning into a hunt for dead links.
