About WPML String Translation Addon
When the content is translated but the site still speaks another language
You translate the pages and posts, and yet visitors still run into "Read more", "Add to cart" or an error message in the wrong language. Those texts aren't content: they live in the theme and in plugins, they are short and they are scattered around. WPML String Translation Addon exists for exactly that.
Whoever installs this usually already has a half-finished multilingual site, and the part that goes wrong is the last stretch: it's those small texts that make a site look translated in a hurry. A site with perfect pages and the buy button in English looks careless at the very point where the customer decides.
What WPML means by a string and how it collects them
A string is any text that doesn't belong to a post, a page or a taxonomy term: the site tagline, widget titles, theme labels (such as "Read more" or "Posted by"), plugin labels, form fields, error messages and button text.
- Automatic registration: with automatic translation of everything turned on and the option to register unmanaged strings enabled, WPML detects new texts as they appear while you and your visitors browse, and includes them in the next translation pass. For many sites that's enough.
- Strings tab: inside WPML → Translations it lists every registered text, with one column per language. You filter by domain (the source theme or plugin) or by status, search by text and translate by hand.
- Fine control: it lets you fix what an automatic engine produced, change the source language of certain strings or of a whole domain (useful if a theme was written in a language other than English) and see where on the site each text appears.
Texts the automatic registration can't see, and things worth knowing
Some texts nobody sees while browsing: admin settings labels, widget configuration text or copyright notices. They don't register on their own. For these WPML has a separate scanner, Admin Texts Translation: you scan the theme or plugin, tick the strings you want and they move to the Strings tab.
Other limits to keep in mind:
- It doesn't work on its own: it's a WPML addon and needs WPML to be installed. Without it, the Strings tab disappears and the interface texts of themes and plugins are not translated.
- Strings generated from JavaScript files require turning on the JS detection setting, and it's best to turn it off when the scan is done because it can affect performance.
- It doesn't translate posts, pages or taxonomies: the rest of WPML does that.
Frequently asked questions
Can I translate the texts of my theme and my plugins?
Yes, as long as the texts are registered. If they don't show up in the Strings tab, use the Admin Texts Translation scanner.
Does it work if the theme is written in a language other than English?
Yes. You can change the source language of specific strings or of a whole domain, and WPML will translate from the correct language from then on.
Can I send the texts to an external translator?
Yes, with the PO file import and export utility. You export the registered strings (with their translations if they already exist, or as a blank template), and when you get the translated file back you import it: existing translations are updated and new ones are added.
Can I correct an automatic translation?
Yes, from the Strings tab you can edit any translation and replace whatever the automatic engine produced.
First make sure the strings are registered
The order that saves trouble: activate WPML with this addon, leave automatic registration on while you browse the site as an administrator and review the Strings tab filtering by domain. If something you see on screen is missing, look in Admin Texts Translation. If you plan to use an external translator, first check that everything you want to send is registered, because the PO file only contains what is already on the list.
