About WPML Woocommerce Multilingual

If your store already sells in several countries and the cart is still in one language

Translating product pages is the easy part. What usually stays untranslated is what the customer sees when they are about to pay: the shipping name, the payment instructions, a coupon error message or the confirmation email. Sales slip away there, and nobody checks it from the dashboard.

It suits you if you already work with WPML and sell with WooCommerce in more than one language or more than one currency. It does not suit you if you want a plugin that works on its own: it is a WPML add-on and needs WPML installed. Nor does it leave the store translated without any work: the texts have to be translated, by hand or with WPML's automatic translation.

Other limits: images are shared across languages by default, so if a photo has text embedded in it you will have to replace it in each language. And coupon codes do not change, only their descriptions and messages.

Products with WPML Woocommerce Multilingual: variations that stay linked

Simple, grouped, external and variable products follow the same workflow: title, descriptions, attributes, variations, gallery, alt text, custom fields and SEO metadata. The same goes for the product types added by extensions such as Subscriptions, Bookings, Memberships, Product Bundles, Composite Products or Mix and Match.

The parent product and its variations stay linked across languages: the blue in English is the same product as the bleu in French. Global and custom attributes work the same way.

  • Taxonomies: categories and tags with their hierarchy, brands, shipping classes and custom taxonomies.
  • URLs: each slug segment is translated, from /shop/jackets/leather/ to /boutique/vestes/cuir/.
  • Reviews: moderation status, title and content per language, so each customer sees the relevant ones.
  • Stock and sale labels: «out of stock», «on sale» or a custom badge appear in the customer's language through string translation.

From cart to order email: the stretch almost nobody checks

Both the classic shortcode checkout and the Cart and Checkout blocks work. The My Account area (dashboard, orders, downloads, addresses, payment methods and account details) is translated too, including the endpoints added by other extensions.

Also translated are the names and descriptions of shipping and payment methods, with the instructions shown on the thank-you page, success, error and information notices, the add-to-cart button text and the product filters of plugins such as HUSKY or YITH.

As for emails, WooCommerce records the language the order was placed in and the plugin sends the matching version when its status changes: new order, processing, completed, cancelled, failed, refunded, invoice, customer note, new account and password reset. Emails from extensions and from email-design plugins such as YayMail are included. Subject, body and footer are translated.

Prices in euros, dollars or yen without dividing by yesterday's exchange rate

Multicurrency works even if your store has a single language. You have three ways of working:

  • Manual prices per currency: €19.99 in Europe, $24.99 in the US, ¥3,000 in Japan, round figures instead of the result of a conversion. They are set on each product's edit screen.
  • Automatic conversion: you set a base price and the plugin applies an exchange rate, which can come from a source at the frequency you choose or be set by hand.
  • A mix per currency: manual for your three main markets, automatic for the rest.

Each currency has its own format: symbol position, thousand and decimal separators, and number of decimals. WooCommerce's tax-by-location rules apply on top of the currencies, so customers see their country's tax in their own currency. You can also assign the payment gateway by country and currency; confirm with your payment processor that it supports each currency.

Common questions from people who already have WPML and WooCommerce

Does it work without WPML?

No. It is a WPML add-on and relies on it to translate content and strings.

Can I sell in several currencies with a single language?

Yes. Multicurrency does not require the store to be in several languages.

Does everything get translated on its own?

You can switch on WPML's automatic translation with PTC as the engine, which covers products, categories, pages, cart labels, checkout fields and emails. If you prefer, you translate by hand.

Does the customer get the email in their language?

Yes, in the language the order was placed in.
