About Advanced Ads – Geo Targeting
The same ad slot is not worth the same to every visitor
If your site gets traffic from several countries, a banner that links to a store where the reader cannot buy is wasted space. An Amazon US affiliate link loses almost all its value for someone browsing from the UK or Australia. Advanced Ads – Geo Targeting solves that: it decides which ad each visitor sees based on where they are visiting from.
Affiliates, local news and tourism: three uses where location changes the result
- Regional affiliate programs: you sign up for several (for example Amazon in the US, UK, Canada or Australia) and each visitor sees the banner that leads to the store where they are most likely to buy.
- Local media: you sell the same space to businesses in different areas and, for anyone outside that area, you show a general ad or one from a network such as AdSense.
- Travel sites: with tourist traffic, you can recommend attractions or restaurants in the city the reader is in.
The underlying idea: in advertising, the same click is worth different amounts depending on where the person clicking is. A site with an international audience that treats everyone the same leaves money on the table.
How finely you can target: continent, country, region, city or radius
You can show or hide an ad based on the visitor's continent, country, region or state, and city. There is also an option to group all visitors from the European Union at once, useful if a campaign only makes sense there or if you want to exclude them.
Radius around a point
Besides administrative divisions, you can target a radius around a specific location. It works for areas that do not match any city or region, such as the catchment area of a shop.
Names in several languages
City and region names can be entered in up to 8 languages, which is handy when place names change from one language to another.
Local database: no query limit, but you must request a key
Geolocation uses MaxMind's GeoLite2 data, hosted on your own server. That is why there is no cap on the number of geolocation requests. To download it, Advanced Ads connects to MaxMind and fetches it automatically, but you need a free MaxMind license key, which you have to request yourself.
Campaigns, reports and exact location are out of scope
Before buying, separate what is already solved from what you will have to cover yourself:
- Already solved: showing or hiding ads by continent, country, region, city or radius, and grouping the EU.
- By hand: opening accounts with each affiliate program or ad network, and creating an ad variant for each area.
- By hand: finding and billing local advertisers if you sell direct space.
Do not expect absolute precision either: IP-based geolocation is an estimate, and on some connections, such as those using a VPN, it may not match the visitor's real location. If you are going to target by city or radius, test before promising it to an advertiser.
