WooCommerce coupons only know how to subtract
A percentage, a fixed amount, free shipping. That is everything WooCommerce ships with, and it does not stretch to almost any real promotion. Not buy one get one, nor the discount that only applies above a certain cart value, nor the Tuesday afternoon offer, nor the free gift when two items from a category get bought.
Advanced Coupons adds the conditional part, which is where the margin lives.
What it lets you build
- Buy one get one, on a product, a group or an entire category, with the free item defined separately.
- Cart conditions: containing a certain product, exceeding an amount, the customer having bought before.
- Fine-grained scheduling: day of the week and time of day, for recurring offers with no manual activation.
- URL coupons, applied by arriving through an address, ideal for email and social media.
- Automatic application, so the discount goes on when the condition is met, without the customer typing anything.
Store credit and points
It lets you issue credit to customers to spend on later purchases, and build a points programme redeemable for that credit. It is the usual way of turning a refund into a second sale rather than money leaving the account.
One management note: issued credit is money you owe, even though it has not left the account. Worth carrying it in the books as what it is and not as a free promotion.
The warning rarely given
A discount that is easy to get teaches the customer not to buy without one. If your shop has a permanent welcome coupon and an abandoned cart one and a seasonal one, you have lowered your prices and added steps on top.
The advantage of a plugin like this is not running more discounts, it is running discounts with conditions that protect the margin: a minimum spend, specific categories, first purchase, or the buy one get one that shifts the product piling up on you. The difference between those two ways of using it is the whole difference.
