About All-in-One WP Migration FTP Extension
The large backup that will not fit through the browser
All-in-One WP Migration exports an entire site as a single file, and it works very well until the site grows. That is where the usual two limits appear: the file downloads to your computer and has to be uploaded again by hand, and browser uploads have a cap that on many hosts rules out real sites.
This extension adds a destination with neither of those problems: your own server, over FTP.
What it adds
- Export and import over FTP, straight between WordPress and the server, without passing through your computer.
- Support for FTPS and SFTP, the encrypted versions of the protocol.
- Scheduled backups, running by themselves at whatever interval you decide.
- WP CLI commands, for automating it from the command line or a deployment script.
A warning about plain FTP
Worth saying plainly because it affects security and plenty of people overlook it: classic FTP travels unencrypted. It sends the username and password in plain text, and with them the entire contents of the transfer.
And what gets transferred here is not just any file: it is your whole site, database included, meaning the data of all your users and their hashed passwords. Intercepting that on an untrustworthy network does not take much.
Which is why it matters that the extension supports SFTP and FTPS. Use them whenever your server offers them, which today is nearly always. Unencrypted FTP should be left to cases with no alternative, and not even then with the database inside.
The first thing to know
It is an extension, not a standalone product: it needs the All-in-One WP Migration plugin installed. What it contributes is the destination, not the backup mechanism.
Who it is for
Large sites that will not fit through a browser upload, agencies managing several sites with their own server, anyone wanting automatic backups on their own infrastructure, and projects with automated deployments.
