About AutomatorWP Webhooks
A webhook URL is a door with actions behind it
Your application tells WordPress about a payment and WordPress enrols that person in a course. No one in between, and a single request to a web address.
That address is no longer a simple notice: it is a switch that runs whatever you have hung from it. If behind it there is an enrolment, a rank or a new user, whoever manages to make that request with the right data triggers that process. The security question is not whether the webhook works, but what a request must carry for your site to obey it.
Webhooks is the AutomatorWP add-on that lets WordPress send and receive data with any website, application or service that supports webhooks or a REST API.
One trigger, one action and two tags
Everything it adds belongs to the PRO edition and appears within the AutomatorWP integration.
- Receive data from a webhook: a trigger for regular and anonymous automations, with its own URL.
- Send data to a webhook: an action with POST, GET or PUT methods and FORM or JSON format.
- Trigger tag: retrieves the fields of the received webhook.
- Response tag: retrieves what the server returns for use in the following actions.
- Nested fields: keys are written separated by slashes, like
data/first_name, with unlimited levels.
With those pieces you can connect two sites (a purchase on one enrols in a course on the other), clone posts or users between sites, link with Zapier or Integromat, or give an application of your own a way to enrol users or add them to a group.
What a request must carry to be accepted
A password in the form of a field. Add a field, mark it as required and set the required value, which must match exactly. If the value is left empty, none is demanded.
The fields you expect. Each has a key, a type and a required mark. The Get samples button listens for a real request and proposes the fields.
A way of knowing who the user is. In automations with a user, it is assigned in three ways: the user logged in through the WordPress REST API, a field with their ID, or a field with their email. Anonymous automations do not need an assigned user.
Each entry in the webhook log records the source URL, the method, the parameters and the assigned user. It is the place to review what actually arrived.
It depends on AutomatorWP and on what is at the other end
It does not work on its own. It is an AutomatorWP add-on.
Talking to another WordPress needs preparation on both sides. The other site must have AutomatorWP and this add-on, or offer its REST API.
Its features do not include retries or send queues.
Requirements and a first webhook
You need AutomatorWP, which requires WordPress 4.4 or higher and PHP 7.0 or higher. To receive data:
- Install the add-on and create an automation.
- Add the receive data trigger, within the AutomatorWP integration.
- Copy the URL into the service that will send the request.
- Use Get samples to capture the fields of a real request.
- Add a required field with a required value.
- Configure how the user is determined and add the actions.
- Review the log before activating the real process.
Other ways to connect WordPress with the outside
AutomatorWP Pro is the paid version of the platform this add-on works on. WP Webhooks Pro is a plugin dedicated to the same job: it sends HTTP requests when something happens on the site, receives actions from outside and chains steps into flows. Uncanny Automator Pro is another automation system inside WordPress, based on recipes, with conditions and filters.
Password, JSON, responses and webhook tests
Can the URL be protected with a password?
Yes. Add a required field with a required value to the trigger. The request must send it exactly.
Does it send JSON?
Yes. The send action supports FORM or JSON. With JSON and the POST or PUT method, the Content-Type header is set to application/json automatically.
Can I read what the server responds?
Yes. The response tag makes that data available to the following actions, including nested fields.
Can it be tested before activating?
Yes. The send action has a button to send a test request, and the trigger can listen for an incoming request.
