About BuddyPress Activity Privacy

When everything you post is visible to anyone, people stop posting

In a community of your own, the member who writes an opinion, uploads a weekend photo or complains about their job does not think about who will read it until someone unexpected does. If the activity stream is public to everyone, members censor themselves or simply go quiet, and a community that does not post fades away.

BuddyPress Activity Privacy lets each member decide who sees each post. For whoever runs the community, this is very practical: people dare to share more personal things, and that is what keeps the stream alive.

BuddyPress Activity Privacy puts a selector on every post

When you activate the plugin, a privacy dropdown appears in the activity form, both in the general stream and in the profile form. The available levels are:

  • Public
  • Private
  • My Friends: members who are not on their friends list will not see it.
  • All Members

Members can also change the privacy of a post they have already published, straight from its entry in the stream, and set their default level under Account, Settings, Activity Privacy. That way they do not have to choose every time.

As an administrator you get your own panel under Settings, BuddyPress Activity Privacy: you can enable or disable some levels, define the default level, decide whether members can override that default and choose whether privacy applies to new posts or to existing ones. It also covers followers and following as a privacy level.

Where it does not reach

It only works with user activity. It cannot set privacy on group posts, so if your community lives mostly in groups, the plugin will cover little. Nor does it make your site compliant with any data protection rules on its own: it gives members control over their activity, nothing more.

Frequently asked questions before installing it

Can I let each user choose their own privacy?

Yes, that is the core feature. Each member chooses when posting and can edit it afterwards.

Does it work for posts inside groups?

No. It only works with user activities.

Does it work with Legacy and Nouveau?

Yes, with both BuddyPress template packs. It also works with BuddyDev's Community Builder theme.

Can I remove levels I do not want to offer?

Yes, from the settings you can disable some levels and set which one is the default.

Does it replace BuddyPress?

No. It is an add-on and needs BuddyPress installed with the activity component active.

Test the levels with three accounts before opening it to the community

The quickest way to avoid surprises is to create three test users: the author, a friend of the author and a member with no relationship to them. Publish a post with each level and log in with each account to see what appears. If you use the friends or followers level, check in the demo that those relationships are active in your community.

Then set the default level from the admin panel. It is worth deciding whether you want it public or more restrictive, because most members will never touch that value.
