About CURCY - WooCommerce Multi Currency - Currency Switcher
For the store that sells abroad but charges through a gateway that does not accept everything
Showing prices in the visitor's currency is easy. The hard part is making what they see in the shop match what they pay at checkout, and that is where many international sales are lost: the customer sees a price in their currency and, when paying, a different one appears, or a bank charge they did not expect.
CURCY suits anyone with a WooCommerce store who wants customers from several countries to see prices in their own currency, with exchange rates they control. It is not for you if you expect the plugin to charge in any currency on its own: to pay in the chosen currency, you need an active gateway that supports it. It also does not resolve detection by state, province or region: IP geolocation works at country level.
Another limit: automatic country detection may fail on sites or servers that use a cache. Test the behavior on your hosting before relying on it.
How CURCY decides which currency each visitor sees
There are three routes you can combine:
- By country: it detects the country from the IP and shows the currency you assigned to that country.
- By language: if you use WPML or Polylang, you can show pounds on the English site and euros on the Spanish site.
- Chosen by the customer: with a currency bar, a widget or a shortcode.
If you do not want to change the main price as soon as someone arrives, you can show the price in your base currency and, below it, an approximate price in the visitor's currency. It is a cautious option when you doubt the geolocation.
Exchange rates, fees and fixed prices in CURCY
Exchange rates can be set by hand or updated automatically every set number of hours, days, weeks or months. For automatic updates you choose between VillaTheme.com, Google Finance or Yahoo Finance.
Two features matter more than they seem:
- Exchange fee: adds a permanent margin to the rate, to cover what your bank or money transfer operator charges.
- Fixed price per currency: replaces the calculated price with a value you decide. Useful when 19.99 in euros should not turn into 21.73 in another currency. Fixed regular and sale prices can be loaded or changed with CSV files.
Charging in several currencies: what you set up at checkout
You can show prices in four currencies and accept payment in only two, for example. You can also choose which payment methods appear for each currency, force a specific currency when the place order button is clicked, and change the currency when the customer edits their billing or shipping address.
If the price on the product page and the one at checkout are not in the same currency, there is an option to show both and avoid surprises.
Selectors, bar and shortcodes to place the currency switch
The currency bar allows its own title, left or right position, colors and five styles: code, symbol, flag, flag with code, or flag with symbol. You can limit the pages where it appears with WordPress and WooCommerce conditional tags, and collapse it when there are many currencies.
If you prefer a widget or a shortcode, there are several selector layouts, with adjustable flag size. There are also shortcodes to show live exchange rates, convert an amount or display a product's price in a specific currency.
A security warning: the conditional tags field of the bar uses eval() internally. Fill it only with valid, trusted tags.
Frequently asked questions
Does it also convert variation and sale prices?
You can assign fixed regular and sale prices per currency, and load them by CSV. Check in the demo how your variable products behave.
Can I charge in euros even if my store is in dollars?
Yes, as long as you have an active payment gateway that supports euros. Without it, the customer will see the price but will not be able to pay in that currency.
