About Directorist Claim Listing
A directory full of listings nobody manages
Whoever builds a directory usually fills it alone: hotels, real estate agencies, shops or clinics that appear without their owner knowing. The result is outdated data, unflattering photos and no way for the real owner to take control. Directorist Claim Listing fills exactly that gap: it turns every listing created by you or your users into something its real owner can claim.
The listing exists before the customer, and that is where the business is
In a normal directory the owner hires you to appear. Here it works the other way around: the listing is already published, and the owner finds it, sees it is theirs and decides whether to take control. That is the commercial advantage of this model, but also its demand: you need a directory with listings worth claiming, meaning real businesses behind them. Without that, the claim button generates nothing.
How a claim works, from start to finish
On each listing's detail page a claim widget with a button appears. The user fills in a simple form and, if you have set a cost, pays in that same process. You receive the request and decide.
- Free, fixed fee or pricing plan: you can let listings be claimed at no cost, charge a default fixed amount or tie the claim to a plan.
- Moderation from the dashboard: approve, reject or delete each claim, with the details of each request in view.
- Configurable emails: you can enable or disable notices to the admin and to the claimer when a claim is submitted, approved or rejected, and edit those email templates.
Pricing plans need another extension
What the plugin already solves and what you must cover yourself:
- Already solved: the claim widget and form, charging a default fixed fee, moderation of requests and notification emails.
- With another extension: charging through pricing plans requires the Pricing Plan extension or the Pricing Plan extension for WooCommerce. To use the gateways WooCommerce supports, you need Directorist's WooCommerce Pricing add-on.
- Prerequisite: it is an add-on for the Directorist plugin, which must be installed; it does not work on its own.
- On you: verifying that the person claiming is really the owner. The plugin gives you the tool to approve or reject, but the judgment is yours, for example by asking for proof by email before approving.
- On you: reaching the owners. The plugin does not contact them; you or your team will have to write to them or wait for them to find their listing.
Getting paid with PayPal, Stripe or bank transfer
With the fixed fee and with plans, a claim can be paid through several gateways, including PayPal, Stripe or offline bank payment. If you go through WooCommerce with the matching add-on, you can offer every gateway WooCommerce supports. For a local directory, offering a transfer as well as card payment often helps with small businesses that prefer not to pay online.
Frequently asked questions about Directorist Claim Listing
Does it work without the Directorist plugin?
No. It is an extension and needs the Directorist plugin installed.
Can any user claim a listing?
Yes, any user can submit a claim. That is why you should review each request before approving it.
Can I charge different amounts depending on the type of claim?
With a pricing plan, yes, as long as you have the plans extension installed. Without it, there is only the default fixed fee or free claiming.
Can I change the emails that are sent?
Yes. Notifications can be enabled or disabled and their templates are edited from the dashboard.
Does it suit any type of directory?
It is useful in any directory where listings represent businesses with an owner, such as hotels. If your listings have no owner who could claim them, it will add nothing.
