About Download Monitor Advanced Access Manager
When everyone who downloads has the same rights, something is wrong
Protecting a file with a simple "registered users only" falls short as soon as you sell or distribute material of some value: the customer who paid for a year gets in just like the one who signed up yesterday, nobody controls how many times the same PDF is downloaded, and a single rule for the whole catalog forces you to repeat the setup file by file. Download Monitor Advanced Access Manager adds to Download Monitor a system of access rules, per download and global, to decide who can download what and under which conditions.
How the rules in Download Monitor Advanced Access Manager work
Each rule can combine three criteria: roles, specific users and IP addresses. This lets you allow a download to the subscribers of a role, to one particular person or to an office with a known IP, and keep everyone else out.
In addition, each rule supports extra restrictions:
- Date period: access is only valid within a time range.
- Number of downloads: access is cut off once a set number of downloads is reached.
Per-file rules and global rules: order matters
Global rules apply to all your downloads from a single place. But each download's own rules are evaluated first, and the global ones only come into play when none of them matches. In practice: define a general policy for the entire catalog and make specific exceptions in the files that need it, without touching the rest.
Which businesses get the most out of this
You sell digital material by usage, not by time
This is the clearest case: instead of charging an open-ended monthly or yearly membership, you can limit each role to a fixed number of downloads. A real example is a platform that sells PDF lessons to teachers with a yearly subscription and a download cap per role, and lets users who run out buy more downloads. Think ahead about what happens when someone reaches the cap: the rule cuts off access, but you have to build the top-up model with your membership plugin.
You distribute documents to a closed group
If you share documents with a closed group, the combination of role, user and IP lets you restrict access to the right people.
You run a multisite network
The extension is compatible with multisite and network installations, and it works alongside other access restriction options and extensions.
It needs Download Monitor and is not a membership plugin
It is an extension: it does not work on its own and requires Download Monitor to be installed. Nor does it create roles, paid plans or payments: it relies on the roles and users that already exist in your WordPress, usually managed with a membership or content restriction plugin. And it only works on WordPress, not on platforms such as Shopify, Wix or Squarespace.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply one rule to all downloads at once?
Yes, with global rules. If a download has its own rule and it matches, that one takes priority.
Can I limit the number of downloads per user?
Yes, each rule can include a download count limit, as well as a date period.
Can I restrict by IP?
Yes, IP addresses are one of the criteria, along with roles and users, and they can be combined.
Does it work with my membership plugin?
It is designed to work alongside membership or content restriction plugins, such as Restrict Content PRO. If you use another one, check in a demo that the roles it generates are recognized in the rules.
Does it work on multisite?
Yes, it is compatible with multisite and network installations.
