About Easy Digital Downloads Free Downloads
A free resource lost to the shopping cart
Giving away a PDF, a sample or a trial version seems easy, until the visitor has to add it to the cart, go through a checkout and "pay" zero. Many give up halfway. Free Downloads is an Easy Digital Downloads add-on that avoids that detour: the visitor clicks, fills in a short pop-up window and gets the file.
What happens when someone clicks a download with Free Downloads
A modal opens that skips the standard cart and checkout. You decide what to ask the visitor for:
- First name, last name or both as required fields.
- Creating an account in your store.
- Verifying their email address.
- A custom message inside the window.
Afterwards you can send them to the success page with the link, redirect them to another page of yours or start the download automatically. It suits ebooks, reports, image, video or music samples, training material or reduced versions of software.
Your leads show up as customers with zero spent
Everyone who fills in the modal becomes one more EDD customer, and that is worth keeping in mind when you count real customers. The way to tell them apart is the total spent column: someone with zero is a lead, not a buyer. From Downloads » Customers you can see everyone, leave notes, fix their details, resend the confirmation email, send them a new link and export the list of people who downloaded a resource.
Email follow-up needs a separate platform
Free Downloads captures the contact, but it is not an email sending system. Here is what it covers and what is left to you:
- Already solved: the pop-up window, skipping the cart, required fields, email verification, redirects and recording the lead in the customer record.
- With another tool: automatic list subscription is possible with platforms such as Mailchimp, ConvertKit, ActiveCampaign, Campaign Monitor, GetResponse, AWeber, MailPoet or Mad Mimi, but you need an account with one and must connect it.
- By hand: writing the welcome email and later messages, such as a newsletter.
- By hand: creating the free resource and placing the offer on your home page, landing pages, blog or pop-ups.
Writing to a large list from your personal email usually ends up in the spam folder, and it is very slow; that is why an email platform makes sense. And remember it is an add-on: without Easy Digital Downloads it does not work.

No. It is an extension for stores that already use EDD.
Do I have to ask for a lot of information?
No. You choose: you can require a first name, last name, user account or email verification, depending on what you want to ask for in exchange for the file.
How do I tell someone who only downloaded from someone who bought?
Look at the total spent column in the customer list: if it is zero, it is a lead.
Does it subscribe people to my mailing list automatically?
Yes, if you connect one of the compatible platforms. That platform sends the emails, not the plugin.
