About Easy Digital Downloads (Pro)

Built for people who sell files and keys, not boxes that ship

Selling a PDF, a course or a plugin with a store designed for physical goods means dodging shipping fields, inventory and transport costs that make no sense. Easy Digital Downloads (Pro) starts from the opposite assumption: what you sell is a file or a key, and there is nothing to pack.

Whoever installs this usually runs a business where the product copies at zero cost, so stock is never the problem. The real problem is who owns the customer. Sellers who only use third-party marketplaces don't control the relationship with the buyer or their email, and depend on rules someone else changes. Having your own store on WordPress solves exactly that.

  • It suits you if you sell e-books, PDFs, software, plugins, themes, music, photography, video or downloadable courses.
  • It doesn't suit you if you need to manage shipping, stock or carriers.
  • It works inside WordPress: without a WordPress site there is no store.

Delivery that closes itself after payment

After paying, the buyer gets their download without you sending anything by hand. You can limit access with expiring links and a maximum number of downloads, and the system logs downloads, including the IP, so you can see who took what.

This stops links being passed around among strangers, but it is not a safe: a file downloaded legitimately can be copied afterwards. If piracy is your main concern, combine these limits with license keys in the case of software.

Getting paid with Stripe, PayPal and pay-what-you-want

The store accepts gateways such as Stripe and PayPal, and methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, as well as several currencies. It supports one-time purchases, subscriptions and pay-what-you-want prices, useful if you sell art or music and want the customer to decide how much to pay.

Discounts with rules

Discount codes can be single-use, have a maximum number of redemptions or a date range. That lets you run a weekend offer without it staying active forever.

No platform fee

The plugin does not take a percentage of your sales: you only pay what your payment gateway charges. Products and transactions have no cap.

What to do with the data in Easy Digital Downloads

Reports show sales, customers and products, and let you export data to analyze it elsewhere. They help answer useful questions: which product sustains the store, who buys again and which campaigns moved revenue.

So you don't have to work by hand, it connects with email marketing tools such as Mailchimp, with accounting and with CRM, and it has an API and webhooks for custom integrations. Checkout and the customer account are built with WordPress blocks.

Paid content and subscriptions: what it does and what needs help

You can restrict access to content for those who have purchased and manage permissions. For access tiers and exclusive areas, the integration relies on membership plugins: don't expect a full community from this plugin alone.

Recurring subscriptions and software license keys are advanced features, so test them in the demo with your specific case before building your business model on them.

Questions before setting up the store

Can I sell physical products?

That is not its purpose. It is made for what is delivered as a file or a key.

Does it charge a commission per sale?

No. You only pay your gateway's fees, such as Stripe or PayPal.

What can I sell?

Almost anything delivered as a file or a key: e-books, software, plugins, themes, music, photos, video or courses.

Is it suitable for selling services?

It can charge for services with no shipping or inventory, although it is designed around downloads.
