About Facebook Like User Activity Stream For BuddyPress
An activity directory full of strangers is nothing like Facebook
People who arrive in your community from Facebook expect to open the site and see what their friends and groups are doing. In BuddyPress, the all-activity tab mixes whatever anyone posts: noise for the veteran member and a chaotic room for the newcomer.
Facebook Like User Activity Stream For BuddyPress gathers each user's network news on a single page: their friends, their groups and the people they follow. A small community is not retained by more activity, but by each member seeing the activity that concerns them. A stream filtered by their network makes a low-traffic site feel alive.
From profile to personal stream, step by step
Picture a photography enthusiast community built with BuddyPress and see what happens at each step:
- You configure it: under Settings, Facebook Like Activity Settings, you choose whether the stream lives on the member's profile or in the All Activity tab of the directory. If you put it on the profile, you can change the slug and the tab label.
- The member enters their profile: they find the link to their stream, with what their friends, groups and followed people publish, all together. It includes activity from private groups they belong to.
- They click a username: they land directly on the stream, without searching through tabs.
- They visit another member's profile: they see that profile as usual, not the other person's network. The stream belongs to each user and is limited to the logged-in user, just like on the familiar social networks.
A useful detail: group updates appear on the same page even if the people posting them are not the member's friends. If your community is built around groups, that stream fills up sooner than one based on friendships alone.
Questions from people who hesitate
Does it work without BuddyPress?
No. It is a BuddyPress add-on and takes friends, groups and follows from it. If your community uses none of those components, there will be little to aggregate.
Does it replace the site-wide activity?
Only if you want it to. You can turn the All Activity tab of the directory into a view where each logged-in user sees only their network, or leave it as is and add the stream as an extra tab on the profile.
Can I change the tab name?
Yes, the stream label and, if you enable it on the profile, the slug can be customized from the settings.
Does it help if I already use a followers system?
It is designed for friends, groups, followers and following. Check in the demo that your specific follow plugin is reflected in the stream.
Profile or directory: two places for the same stream
Choose the directory if you want new members to open the community and go straight to their stream, as on Facebook. Choose the profile if you prefer to keep the global view for discovering new members and groups. If a user has no friends or groups, it is worth inviting them to join groups right after registering.
It aggregates the activity that already exists, nothing more
This plugin is not a complete social network. If you want one, you will have to combine it with other plugins.
It is most noticeable in communities whose users come from well-known social networks: they find a familiar stream and do not have to learn how BuddyPress works.
