About FacetWP Schedule Indexer
When the filtered listing doesn't reflect what you just changed
A directory, a rental catalog or an accommodation listing with filters relies on an index. If that index falls out of date, visitors filter by availability, category or custom field and may see results that are no longer true.
FacetWP Schedule Indexer is a small FacetWP add-on that triggers a full reindex periodically through WP-Cron, instead of reindexing every time someone saves an entry.
Why reindexing everything at intervals can beat reindexing on save
The normal FacetWP behavior is the automatic indexer: every time you edit or save an entry, a page or the name or slug of a term, only that piece is updated. It is convenient and light. This plugin changes the logic: a full reindex on a schedule you choose.
By default the event runs every hour.
How it works and what its limits are
- Built-in frequencies: hourly, twice daily, daily and weekly, the ones WordPress offers with wp_schedule_event().
- Custom frequency: you can create your own (for example, every 15 minutes) with a WordPress filter that defines the interval in seconds.
- Changing the frequency requires code: it is done with the facetwp_index_schedule hook, added to the child theme's functions.php, to the Custom Hooks add-on or to a code snippets plugin.
- You must reactivate the plugin: if you change the frequency after activating it, deactivate it and activate it again so WordPress registers the new schedule.
- You must disable automatic indexing: if you don't, several indexing processes may overlap. It is disabled with the FacetWP setting or with the facetwp_indexer_is_enabled hook returning false.
- It depends on FacetWP: it is an add-on and does not work on its own.
Frequently asked questions
Will changes show up instantly?
No. Once automatic indexing is disabled, what you edit will appear in the filters when the next scheduled event runs. If you need immediacy, choose a short frequency or keep automatic indexing without this plugin.
Does it run at the exact time?
Not necessarily. WP-Cron only fires when someone visits the public side of the site. With low traffic, the event may be delayed.
Can that dependence on traffic be avoided?
Yes: by replacing WP-Cron with a server cron, or by using a server cron with the WP-CLI indexing commands instead of this plugin.
How do I know it worked?
FacetWP's indexer stats button shows whether it has already run, and the WP Crontrol plugin shows when the next event, called fwp_scheduled_index, is due.
Test it with WP Crontrol before trusting the site
Scheduled events are hard to debug blindly. Install WP Crontrol, check that the event exists and that the frequency is the one you wanted, visit a few public pages to force it to fire, and confirm in FacetWP's stats that the reindex completed. Do this test before disabling automatic indexing on a site with real bookings.
