About GeoDirectory Location Manager
Your directory is growing, but the core plugin only supports one city
You set up a directory, businesses from other cities start arriving, and you find out the core plugin only lets you publish listings in one location (a city, town or village). Creating every city by hand before anyone needs it is a job nobody wants.
GeoDirectory Location Manager gives each location its own page, with metadata, a description and a featured image. The value is not in piling up cities, but in each one having something of its own to say.
GeoDirectory Location Manager creates locations when someone publishes
There is no need to prefill countries, regions or cities. Locations are generated while a user adds a listing, and the correct details come from the Google API or Open Street Maps. You can have unlimited locations or restrict the directory to the ones you choose: three countries, five regions and twelve cities, for example.
- Location pages with their own SEO: by default they use a general meta with the location name variable, and you can give each one its own text, description and image.
- Sitemaps: if you use Yoast SEO, location sitemaps are generated automatically.
- Merging duplicates: joins two similar locations and fixes the permalinks of the affected listings.
- Count by area: shows how many listings there are in a country, a region or a city.
Be clear about what it is: a GeoDirectory add-on, not a directory on its own, and it needs the core plugin installed. Autocompletes limited to the current location also require the GeoDirectory Advanced Search add-on. And accurate browser geolocation only works over HTTPS.
A switcher that suggests nearby cities and keeps searching when there are no results
In a multi-city directory, changing location has to be easy. When the switcher opens, visitors first see the cities closest to them, and as they type it searches the stored locations via AJAX. It also remembers recent searches.
If what they typed does not exist in your database, the plugin geocodes the text, offers suggestions from the Google or OSM API and allows a proximity search. That way the nearest listings are shown even if that city is not yet in your directory.
- Where to put it: as a menu item, shortcode, widget or block, compatible with page builders.
- The search bar's Near field: shows the current location and can be cleared to search elsewhere.
- Near me: uses mobile GPS or browser geolocation and, if the visitor refuses, offers a map with a draggable pin.
- URLs with coordinates: near me searches generate a link that is easy to share.
- Widgets: switcher, list or grid of locations, Near me button and a description of the current location.
Common questions before opening your directory to more cities
Do I have to create the cities before receiving listings?
No. They are created when a user publishes a listing, using data from Google or Open Street Maps.
Does it work without the GeoDirectory core plugin?
No. It is an add-on and depends on GeoDirectory.
Can I restrict the directory to specific areas?
Yes, you can limit listings to the locations you choose.
What does someone see when they search for a city I do not have?
The text they typed is geocoded and a proximity search can run, so they see the nearest listings.
Does it work with my page builder?
The switcher and widgets can be used as a shortcode, widget or block, and are designed to work with page builders.
Misspelled names create duplicate cities in GeoDirectory Location Manager
Because locations come from what users type or from an import, it is easy to end up with two versions of the same city because of a typo. The merge tool fixes it, but it is easier to review the locations list from time to time than to clean everything up at once.
- Decide early whether the directory accepts any place or only certain areas.
- Look for similar names in the locations table and merge them.
- Test the switcher and the Near me button from a phone, with HTTPS active.
- Check in the demo how a location page looks with its own description.
