When the customer types 'Golf' in the field that asked for the model
A form with three independent dropdowns forces people through hundreds of irrelevant options, and whoever fills it in ends up choosing wrong or giving up. With free-text fields the opposite happens: messy data arrives and someone has to clean it by hand. Gravity Forms Chained Selects is a Gravity Forms add-on that chains dropdowns together: each choice filters the options of the next one.
From year to make to model: how to build a car dealership form
It is the classic example, and it shows what the add-on does and where its job ends.
- First, the list. You prepare the year, make and model combinations in a CSV and import the file to set up the options. The add-on does not include any vehicle catalog: the data is yours, and that file will be the most work for you.
- Then, the field. You add it to the Gravity Forms form (the base plugin is essential).
- Next, the visitor. They choose the year and only see the makes for that year; they choose the make and only see its models. They do not scroll through long lists full of irrelevant options.
If the buyer cannot find their car because your CSV is incomplete, the form cannot fix that. Check the whole list before publishing.

Does it work without Gravity Forms?
No. It is an add-on: it adds a field type to Gravity Forms and does not work on its own.
Is it only for cars?
No. It works wherever what you choose depends on the previous choice: industry → service type → provider in a directory, location hierarchies, or category → subcategory → product.
Does it turn my store into a product filter?
No. It guides the choice inside a form, for example to request a quote or send an enquiry. It does not replace the filters of a catalog.
Can I use data from a database or an API?
Yes, through hooks and filters. That requires custom code, so count on a developer if you do not code.
If your options change every week, do not upload them by hand
A dealership that receives new models or a directory that adds providers ends up with an outdated CSV as soon as someone forgets to update it. For those cases, hooks and filters let the dropdowns read their options from a database or an API, so what the visitor sees matches what is in your system without re-uploading files.
For lists that barely change (provinces and towns, fixed categories), the CSV is enough and you avoid programming anything.
