About Gravity Perks Limit Submissions

A giveaway with a thousand participants and one person who entered fifty times, a job application sent repeatedly by the same candidate, a contact form hammered by a bot: the problem isn't that the form doesn't work, it's that it accepts everything that arrives. Gravity Perks Limit Submissions sets rules on who can submit, how many times and over what period.

A giveaway in four steps with Limit Submissions

Imagine an email giveaway where each person should only enter once. Here is how it would be solved:

  • Step 1, create a limit feed. From the form settings in Gravity Forms you add a limit feed. It is a set of rules that say who or what is limited, how many submissions are allowed and for how long.
  • Step 2, choose the rule. You select a field value, in this case the email, and set the limit to one entry. If someone repeats the address, the submission is blocked.
  • Step 3, define the period. You can count forever, over a rolling window (seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or years), by calendar period (day, week, month or year) or within the form's own schedule, useful if the giveaway has a start and end date.
  • Step 4, write the message. You write the notice people will see when they reach the limit, with merge tag support for personalization. You can also send a notification to the administrator, to the user or to both.

One detail worth knowing: the email only identifies the person if they always type the same one. Someone using another address is, for the plugin, a different participant. If you need more control, you can combine rules, for example email plus IP.

What you can limit: user, role, IP, URL or field

The rules cover several axes, and you can mix them:

  • By IP: limits each IP separately or one specific IP. It helps curb abuse from anonymous visitors.
  • By user: applies the limit to each logged-in WordPress user.
  • By role: limits according to the user's role.
  • By embed URL: the same form on several pages can have a different limit on each one.
  • By field value: the same combination of name and address only once, or any other combination of fields.

Rules are organized in groups: all the rules in a group must be met at once, and it is enough for one group to match for the feed to apply.

Several feeds, and the order matters

You can create as many feeds as you like, and they are evaluated from top to bottom. As soon as one reaches its limit, its message is shown and the following ones are not checked. So it makes sense to put the most specific limit at the top and the most general one at the bottom. You reorder them by dragging.

Other uses that fit: one job application per user, a survey that can be submitted only once a week, quiz attempts per person, or an IP rate limit against spam (for example, one submission per minute).

What Limit Submissions does not do

It needs Gravity Forms to work; it is not a standalone plugin. It limits submissions, but it does not manage stock or places for a product. Nor is it a complete anti-spam tool: an IP limit is a brake, not a barrier against someone who changes networks. And blocking by email only works if the email is a field on the form.

Features to go a step further

A shortcode shows the number of submissions, how many are left and the total limit, ideal for a "12 places left" message on the page. There are also global feeds, collective limits across several forms and hooks for developers who want to customize the behavior.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply the same limit to several forms?

Yes, there are collective limits across several forms, instead of per form.

Can the messages be translated?

There is a specific guide for translating the limit messages with WPML.

Are limits applied when editing entries?

Test it before relying on it.
