About HivePress Import
A directory with few listings doesn't convince, and filling it by hand doesn't scale
A directory with ten listings looks abandoned; one with five hundred looks like a serious site. The hard part is reaching that volume: copying and pasting each listing into the form takes days, and every provider who wants to upload a whole catalog has to repeat the same work listing by listing.
HivePress Import tackles that bottleneck: it adds new listings or updates existing ones, in bulk, from a CSV file. It is a HivePress extension, so you need the base plugin installed and your listing types already set up.
Mapping columns: each piece of data lands in the right field
The flow is simple. You upload the file and match each CSV column to its corresponding listing field. Once the mapping is done, the plugin creates the listings and, if the file includes them, imports the attachments as well.
The mapping matters more than the import itself. It's the moment to catch that the "city" column in your spreadsheet is going to the wrong field, before hundreds of listings are filled in wrongly. Always run a test with a few rows and check the result on the site.
Importing isn't reserved for the administrator: it is meant for users to upload their own listings, and it is useful if your providers arrive with large catalogs in spreadsheets.
Bulk updates and export: the CSV as a working copy
Importing isn't only for the initial load. You can choose how existing listings are updated, so correcting data across many listings doesn't mean opening them one by one.
The extension also exports all listings to a CSV. That has three practical uses:
- Bulk editing: you export, fix things in your spreadsheet and import again.
- Backup: you keep the content of your listings in a file.
- Migration: you move your listings to another site.
The clean CSV is on you, not HivePress Import
Bulk importing multiplies the hits and also the mistakes. A file with categories written three different ways or phone numbers without a format becomes hundreds of messy listings in one click. How the work splits:
- The plugin handles: matching columns to fields, importing attachments, updating existing listings and exporting.
- You handle: sorting out and standardizing the spreadsheet data before uploading it.
- You handle: having created in HivePress the fields you want each column to map to.
- You handle: checking after a small test that attachments are linked to the right listing.
Frequently asked questions about HivePress Import
Does it work without HivePress?
No. It is an extension and depends on the base HivePress plugin, which is where the listings live.
Can I use it to update listings I already have?
Yes. Besides adding new listings, it lets you update existing ones and choose how that is done.
Can I export my listings?
Yes, all of them to a single CSV, to edit them, keep them as a backup or move them to another site.
Does it import images too?
It imports attachments along with the listings. Before loading the full file, test with a few rows to check how they turn out in your listings.
