About JNews - Social Login

Asking a reader to create a new account, invent a password and confirm an email is exactly where many close the tab. If you want people to comment, save favorites or come back already logged in, every form field costs you visitors.

JNews - Social Login takes that form out of the way: visitors log in or register with their Facebook, Google or LinkedIn account.

What changes when registration is a single click

A blog or news site lives on its audience coming back, but most visitors arrive, read and leave without a trace.

The flip side is that every sign-up is a new user on your site. It pays to think from the start about what permissions those people will have.

What you can adjust in JNews - Social Login

  • Where it appears: you choose the location of the social login and registration.
  • Role for new users: you define the default role someone gets when they register.
  • Button style: you select how the social buttons look so they fit your design.
  • Each network separately: Facebook, Google and LinkedIn each have their own switch and their own credentials, so you can enable only the ones you need.

After logging in, users can see the list of recent posts they have liked, a practical reason to sign in again.

Three profiles, three different uses

News site or blog with returning readers

If the person who comes back every day is the one who gives you the most value, logging in with Google or Facebook saves them from remembering yet another password. And the list of posts they liked gives them something of their own on your site.

Professional or B2B content site

When your audience is made up of professionals, enabling LinkedIn makes more sense than relying on Facebook alone.

Site with several types of user

If you distinguish between readers and contributors, the default role is your first barrier. Leave it at the lowest one and raise the level manually for whoever deserves it, so an automatic sign-up never arrives with excess permissions.

Questions before you turn it on

Do I have to use all three networks?

No. Each network is enabled with its own switch and you can leave off the ones you don't want.

Can I decide which role new users get?

Yes, there is an option for the default role of anyone who registers.

What does the user see after logging in?

They can view the list of recent posts they have liked.

Does it work with any theme?

It is installed and managed from the JNews dashboard and its settings live in the theme's customization options, so it is designed for sites running JNews. If you use another theme, check it in a demo first.

It needs an app created on each social network

The plugin does not come with the connections ready: for each network you must create your own application in its developer panel and copy its keys. Facebook asks for an App ID and App Secret, Google asks for an app name, Client ID and Client Secret, and LinkedIn asks for a Client ID and Client Secret. In addition, when configuring each app you are asked for a callback URL shaped like yourdomain.com/?social-callback=facebook (or google, or linkedin). If you don't complete those steps, the buttons will not work.
