About Junction — External Links Controller for WordPress

Every writer links their own way and nobody reviews the attributes

On a site with years of content, external links have been added one by one: some open in the same tab, others in a new tab without protection, others carry nofollow because someone remembered it that day. Reviewing them by hand, post by post, is unworkable, and the result is a link policy that doesn't really exist.

Junction, by 42Theme, moves that decision from the author to the site. If you run a blog with several authors, an affiliate site or a publication with a long archive, the advantage is not one specific feature, but that the outcome no longer depends on the memory of each person who writes.

New tab and protection without typing them into every link

A link that opens a new tab with target=_blank and without rel=noopener lets the destination page reach your window through window.opener and potentially redirect it. Junction adds those attributes for you, so you don't have to type them into each link. From the panel you decide:

  • whether external links open in a new tab;
  • whether they carry noopener and noreferrer;
  • whether they carry nofollow or dofollow;
  • which links to skip and which specific assignments to apply.

With noopener, the linked page also runs in a separate process, so if it loads heavy scripts it doesn't drag yours down. The plugin works on the server side, without relying on JavaScript or CSS, so it adds no extra load to the visitor's browser.

Nofollow where it makes sense, dofollow where you want to back a site

Every dofollow external link shares part of search engines' attention with the destination site. With nofollow you indicate that the link should not be followed and that your site should not be associated with that page. Junction lets you exclude specific pages, links or domains.

It is compatible with Elementor and Gutenberg, and it has been tested with WooCommerce and BuddyPress. It works with themes and frameworks such as Avada, Genesis or Divi. If you already have links with their own rel, check in the demo how it handles them before activating it on a large site.

Is one global rule enough, or do you need to audit link by link?

It is not the tool if you are after something else: it deals with link attributes, and it is not a broken link checker or a redirect manager. And adding nofollow does not guarantee higher rankings: it is a strategy decision that you still make yourself.

Does it work with Elementor and Gutenberg?

Yes, it is compatible with both, and also with the most common themes.

Can I leave out a domain or a page?

Yes. You can exclude specific pages, links or domains.

Does it slow down the site?

It is a server-side solution, with no JavaScript or CSS of its own.

Does it replace an SEO plugin?

No. It only controls how external links are handled; the rest of your SEO (titles, sitemaps, etc.) is out of its scope.
