About Lightweight Cookie Notice

A cookie banner loads on every page and is the first thing each new visitor sees on your site. If the plugin behind it adds stylesheets, scripts and extra requests, you pay that weight on every visit. And if it clashes with your cache, the notice shows up when it shouldn't or fails to show when it should.

Lightweight Cookie Notice and its single JavaScript file

The whole plugin (the notice's HTML, the styles and the events) is generated by a single small pure JavaScript file loaded in the page footer. No other files are added. The notice data is also stored with the WordPress transients API, so it doesn't run database queries on every load.

If your current cookie plugin adds several files, switching reduces the number of HTTP requests. But it is not a miracle for rankings: what counts is your site as a whole.

Categories, expiration and a test mode to fine-tune the notice

Visitors open a settings window and turn cookie categories on or off with toggles. You decide how long their choice is remembered, and you can offer a button to delete their preferences, placed in your cookie policy with a Gutenberg block or a shortcode.

The cookie catalog stores these fields for each cookie:

  • Name and expiration
  • Purpose and provider
  • Domain and type
  • Sensitivity and security

That list can be shown in a post or inside the settings window. With test mode, only the administrator sees the notice, so you can get it right without showing it to anyone. With over a hundred customization options you control the text and style of the notice and the settings window, the target countries and which roles can access the plugin menus. You can also export the configuration to XML and import it on another site.

Geolocation and caching: two settings that fall to you

You can show the notice only to visitors from certain countries. The location is obtained with the HostIP.info service or the MaxMind GeoLite2 database.

On the caching side, the plugin works with WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache, LiteSpeed Cache, SG Optimizer and WP Fastest Cache, but some need configuration changes. Check the plugin manual before going live, especially if you combine geolocation with page caching.

The cookie policy and the inventory are yours to write

The plugin manages the notice, not your legal situation. This is what is covered and what stays on your side:

  • Covered: the notice, the settings window with categories, the delete-preferences button and the expiration of the choice.
  • Covered: a structure to catalog cookies and show them on a page.
  • Yours: knowing which cookies your site really uses and filling in the catalog with them.
  • Yours: writing the cookie policy and deciding which cookies go in each category, with a professional if your case requires it.
  • Yours: checking that third-party scripts respect the visitor's choice on your specific site.

Installing it does not guarantee regulatory compliance by itself.
