A digital news outlet lives or dies by its front page: readers arrive, glance at three headlines and decide whether the site is alive. A standard blog handles this poorly, because it sorts everything by date and can't tell the story of the day from an archive piece.

LiputanWP is a WordPress theme for news portals, with a design along the lines of Liputan6.com. Its demo is built with political content in Indonesian, but the structure suits any newsroom that wants a front page with a clear hierarchy.

One detail is worth keeping in mind: the demo shows the age of each piece in relative format («3 tahun yang lalu»). In a news outlet, the theme makes your publishing pace visible: if you update rarely, the front page gives you away. It's better to launch at a pace you can sustain.

• Headline: the featured story, with headline and excerpt, and other main headlines next to it.
• Widget slider: a carousel of pieces, used for photos in the demo.

• Widget inline video: a video block that shows the length of each one.
• Widget list: a short list of headlines with photos.
• Popular tags: the most-used tags, so readers can follow a topic.
• Most read: a ranking from 1 to 10 showing each piece's category.

At the bottom of the front page there is a «Lihat Lainnya» button to load more and a notice once everything has been shown.

The demo menu includes home, a politics category, photo, video, a collection and a submenu. There are also pages for tags, authors, search, index, most popular and a 404 error. The footer carries the links a news outlet needs: newsroom, code of ethics, journalist procedures, cyber media guidelines, privacy and copyright. An AMP entry also appears: check in the demo whether it offers an AMP version of articles before counting on it.

LiputanWP gives you the storefront, not the outlet. To avoid surprises, here is what comes solved and what you will have to cover:

• Solved: front page with hierarchy, photo and video blocks, most read and tags.

• You cover it: the articles. The demo's headlines and «Lorem ipsum» are filler, and your front page is filled with your own categories and posts.
• You cover it: the editorial and legal texts in the footer (newsroom, code of ethics, privacy), which must reflect your real outlet, not the demo's.
• You cover it: advertising. The demo shows no ad spaces; if you fund yourself with them, you'll need a plugin or manual work.

Yes, but it only pays off if you publish regularly across several sections. On a blog with few articles, a front page with so many blocks will look half empty.
