About MainWP Custom Dashboard Extension
When the MainWP dashboard almost does what you need, but not quite
If you manage dozens of client websites from MainWP, you spend hours a day in that dashboard. Sooner or later a small annoyance appears: a button you would like to hide, a color that tires your eyes, a small function that would save you clicks. Editing the plugin files to fix it is a bad idea, because the next update wipes out your work. MainWP Custom Dashboard Extension exists for that: a separate place to keep your tweaks in PHP, CSS and JavaScript.
Your tweaks live outside the main plugin
The code is not saved in files, but in the WordPress options of your MainWP Dashboard site. That has two practical consequences:
- You can update MainWP Dashboard without fear of losing your modifications.
- If something breaks, you deactivate your custom code and check whether the problem came from there.
No FTP access is needed: everything is written from the extension's own editor, which opens from Add-ons, Administrative, Custom Dashboard.
An editor designed to write code without scares
The editor uses CodeMirror 6 and includes syntax highlighting for PHP, CSS and JavaScript, the One Dark theme, autocompletion, automatic closing of parentheses, braces, brackets and quotes, and code folding. Each language has its own tab and is saved separately, so you can change a style without touching your PHP.
Protection against PHP errors
Before saving a PHP snippet, the extension parses its syntax without running it and rejects malformed code. Snippets are written without the opening and closing PHP tags, and if you include them, they are rejected. Top-level namespace, declare and use statements are not accepted either (use inside a closure is fine). If a fatal parse error still gets executed, you will see a recovery message with a link back to the editor with that code skipped. Other runtime exceptions are caught and logged, instead of taking the page down.
If two people save at the same time
The extension checks whether the snippet changed since you opened the editor. If another user, another tab or an API request modified it first, your save is rejected and does not overwrite that change. Your draft stays on screen, but it is not saved as a recoverable draft: copy it before reloading, compare it with the saved version and save again.
It only acts on your dashboard, not on your clients' sites
This is the most likely source of confusion: this extension applies code only to the site where MainWP Dashboard is installed. Child sites receive nothing. For that there is another MainWP extension, Code Snippets.
- What it solves: changing the look of the dashboard, adding your own functions, keeping your settings separate and testing safely.
- What you will cover separately: deploying code to child sites (another extension), writing the snippets (the extension does not create them for you) and checking that they work, because passing validation only confirms syntax, not that the code behaves well or is safe.
PHP runs site-wide, CSS and JS only in MainWP
CSS and JavaScript snippets are inserted inline on MainWP admin pages, except on child site tabs. They do not load on other admin screens or on the public side. PHP is different: it runs on WordPress initialization with eval() and reaches all requests on the MainWP Dashboard site, not just its screens. If you want it to act only in one context, add conditions or hooks in your code.
Frequently asked questions about MainWP Custom Dashboard Extension
Do I need other plugins?
No, it works on its own inside MainWP Dashboard.
Can I use it to change my clients' sites?
No, it only affects the dashboard. For child sites you need MainWP's Code Snippets extension.
Can I write my own CSS without touching files?
Yes, from the CSS tab of the editor, without FTP.
What happens if I save PHP with an error?
If there is a syntax error, the save is rejected. If a fatal error does get executed, a recovery link to the editor appears.
Does it have examples to get started?
MainWP keeps a GitHub repository with example snippets in CSS, PHP and JavaScript.
