About MainWP File Uploader Extension
An upload to all sites overwrites the same file on every one at once
You have a file that must be on every site in your portfolio, and copying it one by one over FTP is work that repeats with every change.
A bulk upload is a write to every site's server, and a file with the same name in the same folder is replaced on all of them at once. A mistake in the path or the name does not affect a single site: it reaches every site you selected.
File Uploader is a MainWP extension that sends several files to all your child sites in one operation from the Dashboard. MainWP Child receives and saves them, so the sites need no third-party plugin.
How the upload works
- Two ways to add files: the Choose File button or dragging files onto the marked area of the page.
- Destination path: you type it as it should be created on the child sites, and the extension creates the folder on those that lack it.
- Site selection: one by one, by tag or by client.
- File types: it accepts code, configuration, archive, image, document, audio and video formats.
- Other types: they are added with the
mainwp_file_uploader_allowed_file_typesfilter. - Progress: a bar in a window shows how far the upload has got.
Distributing a configuration file to a group of clients
One possibility is to pick by tag the sites that share a folder, type the path and upload the file once. Before launching it to all, test the same upload on a single site and open the destination folder to check the file's name and location. It is a way of working of your own, not a step the extension requires.
If the test goes well, repeat the upload with the same path on the rest of the selection.
What changes the name, what the server blocks and what needs care
- Direct write: files go straight to the server, so an upload needs the same care as one over FTP.
- Cleaned names: spaces and some special characters can become dashes.
- Size: the upload must stay within the PHP Max Upload Filesize and PHP Post Max Size limits of the Dashboard server.
- Hosting rules: each provider can set its own rules on file types and large uploads, and that can stop an upload even when the extension accepts the file.
- MainWP plan: the extension requires MainWP Pro.
First upload and custom file types
- Open MainWP > Add-ons > Administrative > File Uploader.
- Click Choose File and pick the files, or drag them onto the marked area.
- Enter the destination path exactly as you want it created on the child sites.
- Select the sites, tags or clients.
- Click Upload File.
For a file type that is not on the list, install and activate the free MainWP Custom Dashboard extension, open MainWP > Add-ons > Administrative > Custom Dashboard > PHP, paste a snippet that adds the file extension through the filter and save.
MainWP extensions for distributing content to your sites
If what you need is to distribute code snippets rather than files, look at Code Snippets for MainWP. For configuration settings shared across sites, there is Bulk Settings Manager, and to reuse content across sites, Boilerplate.
Answers about File Uploader
What happens if the file already exists on the site?
It is replaced: a file with the same name in the same folder is overwritten.
And if the folder does not exist?
The extension creates it on the sites that lack it.
Do I need another plugin on the child sites?
No. MainWP Child receives and saves the files.
Is there a size limit?
Yes. It is set by the PHP Max Upload Filesize and PHP Post Max Size values of the Dashboard server, plus each host's rules.
