About Marcell – Personal Blog & Magazine WordPress Theme

A blog with a hundred posts needs more than a pretty homepage

Writing is hard work, but what a personal blog loses most is what it has already published: readers arrive for one article, read it and leave without knowing there are eleven more on the same topic. Marcell is designed to prevent that: it shows your archive in many ways and keeps categories, most-read posts and tags in plain sight.

The demo revolves around a travel, photography and cooking blog written in the first person, with advice, inspiration, music and video. It fits if you want your voice to come through, or if your blog is heading toward a magazine with several sections.

List, grid, cover or columns: choose how your archive is browsed

The demo includes many homepage variants: main, fullwidth, list, grid, classic, with a right or left sidebar, minimal, cover, creative, one column and four columns. It helps you decide based on your content: list if your texts are long and you want the headline read with its excerpt; grid if photography leads; one column if you prefer slow reading.

For the article archive there are also classic and chess layouts, and portfolio pages. Galleries come as grid, masonry and cobbles, handy if you publish photography.

Who you are, what is read most and how to subscribe, always at hand

What matters most on a personal blog is that readers know who is writing and what else they can read. The demo handles it with these elements:

  • An "about me" block with a greeting and a short introduction of the author.
  • A category list showing the number of posts in each, so the depth of the archive is visible.
  • A most-popular section and tags for jumping from one topic to another.
  • A newsletter form with a checkbox to accept the terms.
  • Posts with their own format: one with audio and another with a highlighted quote.

It also includes typography and shortcodes pages, and privacy, help, about and contact pages.

Is Marcell right for you if you also want a shop and Instagram?

It depends on what you are after. The demo menu includes a shop page, but before planning to really sell, check in the demo what it shows and how it looks. The Instagram block needs setup: without a feed created, the demo displays an error notice that only administrators see.

Does it work for a magazine with several authors?

Each post shows its author and the structure of sections and categories lets you organize a magazine. The design does start from a personal voice, though, so if you need very elaborate author profiles, check it in the demo.

Is it only for travel blogs?

Not necessarily. The demo talks about travel and food, but the content of the homepages, categories and tags is up to you.

Does the Instagram feed appear on its own?

No. You have to create a feed in the Instagram Feed plugin settings; until then, the error notice is shown to administrators.

Will I have to pick a single homepage?

Yes, you start from one. Try them in the demo with your type of posts in mind.
