About Media Cleaner Pro

Thousands of files in uploads and none you dare to delete

Over the years, the uploads folder of a WordPress site fills up with images from posts that no longer exist, old banners, PDFs from finished campaigns and thumbnails in sizes the theme no longer uses. All of it weighs on your hosting and on every backup, but the real problem is another one: nobody knows what is still in use, so nobody deletes.

And the fear is justified. A file may not appear in any post and still hold up an Elementor design, an ACF field or a theme setting. The media library is a one-way street: uploading is easy and cleaning feels like roulette. Media Cleaner Pro turns that roulette into a list you can review before touching anything.

Cleaning with Media Cleaner Pro, step by step

1. Make a backup

Before you start. The internal trash lets you undo mistakes, but a full backup makes them irrelevant.

2. Scan the media library

The plugin checks each entry against your posts and pages, metadata, custom fields, widgets and the Customizer, and flags the ones nothing uses. It also detects broken entries. The result is a list of candidates, not an automatic deletion.

3. Check that it reads your builder

This is the step that decides whether the cleanup is safe. Each builder stores its images in its own way, and a scanner that does not understand it will flag as unused files that are visible on your site. Out of the box it recognizes 7 popular plugins (WooCommerce and Yoast, among them) and Pro reads 69 more: Elementor, Divi, ACF, WPBakery, Bricks, Avada or Beaver Builder. The free version warns you when it cannot read a builder. If you use one that is not on the supported list, do not delete blindly: review the results one by one.

4. Look for what WordPress has no record of

The filesystem scan, exclusive to Pro, goes through uploads and finds files that are on disk but not in the library. Pro also adds a duplicate finder (identical files uploaded more than once, not similar images) and a thumbnail tool that creates missing ones and lists those made for sizes your site no longer uses.

5. Send to the trash, review and confirm

Nothing is deleted instantly. Files go to the plugin's own trash, where you can restore them with their ID intact, and only then do you confirm permanent deletion. If there is a file you use outside WordPress (in emails, for example), you can mark it as ignored and it will not show up again.

6. On large sites, use WP-CLI

Pro lets you run scans and cleanups from the command line, at full speed or on a schedule. You need server access and some comfort with the terminal.

Questions before you hit delete

Can it delete something I actually use?

False positives are possible, especially if your site stores images in a builder or plugin it does not recognize. That is why the trash, the prior review and the advice to keep a backup exist.

Is the free version enough?

For a site with ordinary posts and pages, the library scan with its trash may be enough. If you work with a builder, want to review the files folder, look for duplicates or use WP-CLI, you need Pro.

Does it find files that do not appear in the library?

Yes, but only with the Pro filesystem scan. The library scan only sees what WordPress has registered.

Can I recover a file I already sent to the trash?

Yes, with one click and keeping its ID. Once permanent deletion is confirmed, only your backup can save you.

Media Cleaner Pro with an AI assistant: it requires AI Engine

If you install AI Engine (free), an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT can, through MCP, run a scan, explain why each file was flagged, ignore false positives and prepare the cleanup. Permanent deletion still needs your approval.

It is an optional extra: without AI Engine, the plugin works the same from its own panel. And even if the assistant explains every result, the decision to delete remains yours.
