About Media Cloud (Premium)

Your images weigh more than your shared hosting can handle

Hardly anyone notices until it happens: the media library grows, the server disk fills up, and every photo, video and PDF is served from the same machine that has to run PHP and the database. On shared hosting that means slow pages just when you have the most visual content. The curious part is that the bottleneck is rarely your site's code, but where files live and where they are delivered from.

Media Cloud targets that spot: it sends your media to a cloud storage service and serves it from there, optionally through a content delivery network. It works with Amazon S3, Cloudflare R2, Google Cloud Storage, DigitalOcean Spaces, Backblaze and others, and with CDNs such as CloudFront, Cloudflare or Fastly.

Media Cloud keeps the WordPress library as usual and changes what sits behind it

What matters for anyone already working with WordPress is that there is no new workflow to learn: the plugin plugs into the usual media library and uploader, and shows each file's cloud information inside the interface itself.

  • Direct uploads: the file goes from your browser to the storage provider without passing through WordPress.
  • Importing what you already have: if your library has existed for years, the plugin can move it to the cloud in the background while you keep working, and there is a page to check progress.
  • Storage browser: you browse the provider's folders from the WordPress dashboard, upload files, import them into the library or delete them.
  • Assets: it can also push your CSS and JavaScript files to the cloud, or set up a CDN that pulls them from your server and rewrite the URLs automatically.

Editing, cropping and watermarks without leaving Media Cloud

Besides storage, it includes image tools that would normally require other plugins or external software.

Advanced editor and cropping

Adjust brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and exposure, apply blur, sharpen, auto enhance or red-eye reduction, add borders and rotate at any angle. You can create presets and tie them to a specific image size, which is handy for giving hero images a special treatment. The crop tool replaces the native WordPress one: it works per image size, with a real-time preview, and remembers your crops so you can tweak them later.

Watermarks and image recognition

Watermarks can be applied to specific sizes, to all of them, to specific images or to all images, and they are non-destructive: if you change the watermark or its position, images update without being regenerated. With Amazon Rekognition or Google Cloud Vision you can tag images automatically, detect faces or moderate explicit content, and crop centered on faces.

Your own video

Media Cloud also encodes video through the Mux service, with adaptive bitrate, watermarks, expiring links and blocks for Gutenberg and Elementor. It is useful if you don't want to depend on YouTube or Vimeo, but it means signing up for that service separately.

Decide whether Media Cloud pays off or whether optimizing on your own server is enough

It is worth it if your library is large, if your hosting is tight on disk space or if your infrastructure already includes S3 and a CDN. If your site has few images and runs well, a good caching plugin probably gives you the same with fewer moving parts. And remember that you now have an account with an external provider to set up and keep an eye on, on top of WordPress.

Does it work without an account with a storage provider?

No. The plugin handles sending and delivery, but you need your own storage service (S3, R2, Spaces, Google Cloud, Backblaze or another compatible one).

Can I move the images I already have?

Yes, there is an import tool that works in the background. Check in the demo how your version offers it before planning a large migration.

Are the video and recognition features fully included?

The plugin integrates them, but they rely on external services (Mux, Amazon Rekognition, Google Cloud Vision) with their own account.

Does it help speed up CSS and JavaScript?

Yes, it can push them to the cloud or rewrite their URLs so a CDN serves them. Always test in a staging environment, because the result depends on your theme and the plugins you run.
