About Meta Box Blocks Extension

Create a Gutenberg block without setting up Webpack or learning React

If you have spent years building themes and plugins in PHP, the day a client asks for a custom block usually ends in configuring Webpack and Babel, or going back to the usual shortcode. Meta Box Blocks Extension solves that hurdle: custom blocks for the block editor are defined in PHP, with a syntax similar to a meta box.

What Meta Box Blocks Extension does with your fields

The idea is that you focus on the logic and on how the block is rendered, and leave the heavy lifting of the settings to Meta Box:

  • Meta Box fields inside the block: the block inherits Meta Box field types and options, so you don't program every setting from scratch.
  • Real-time preview: when you change a field, the block is instantly re-rendered with the new value.
  • Your own JavaScript: if the block needs a dynamic script, such as starting a slider, you can add it.
  • Alignment, CSS class and anchor: the usual block editor settings are available.
  • Code-free creation: with the MB Builder extension, which is separate, blocks are defined by choosing options on screen.

What it needs and what it doesn't cover

It is an add-on: without Meta Box installed it does nothing. It is not for creating custom content types either, its job is blocks. And the look is up to you: you will have to write the HTML and CSS of each block, or it won't look the way you want. If you don't use MB Builder, you need to know PHP.

Common questions from people who write PHP, not React

Do I need to know React or JavaScript?

Not to create the block: it is declared in PHP. JavaScript only comes in if you want dynamic behavior in the block, such as a slider.

Does it work if I don't code?

Yes, as long as you use MB Builder to define the block visually. Even so, you need Meta Box and someone to handle the block template if you want a custom design.

Does it work with all Meta Box fields?

It is designed to use Meta Box field types inside the block, with the same logic you already use in meta boxes.

Does the client see the result while editing?

Yes: the block updates in the editor every time a field changes.

Meta Box first, then the block: that is the order

First of all, check that Meta Box is active on the site, because this extension does nothing without it. Then decide how you will define the blocks: in PHP code if you work with your own theme, or with MB Builder if you prefer an interface.

Start with a simple block, with two or three fields, and validate the preview before complicating it with scripts. If you plan to use it on client projects, also test how the block looks on the front end and how it behaves with the alignments you plan to allow.
