About Meta Box Settings Page
The options page is the only part of your work your client opens every week
Building the settings for a theme or plugin with the WordPress Settings API means registering sections, writing functions that render each field and handling saving by hand. Since it is usually left for last, it ends up as a long, unordered list of fields. Yet that screen is the one your client or your users will use every day, and the impression they get of your work depends quite a lot on it.
Meta Box Settings Page is a Meta Box extension that creates settings pages and theme options for an unlimited number of themes, plugins and sites. The fields are the same types you already know from Meta Box, so you don't write the HTML for each one.
Tabs, boxes or columns: Meta Box Settings Page lets you choose how it looks
These are the pieces that matter most when designing the screen:
- Tab style: it imitates a typical WordPress settings page, with options separated by category but reachable from a single screen.
- Box style: it works like the meta boxes in the post editor. You see all the options without extra clicks and the content is visually separated.
- One or two columns: the second can be a sidebar with information, useful links or even ads.
- Hierarchical menus: a single page with everything, or sub-levels inside the admin menu to separate content.
- Help button: a slide-down section with tabs by category, like WordPress's own help.
It is also compatible with the MB Columns and MB Tabs extensions.
It needs Meta Box and is configured with code
It doesn't work on its own: it is an extension and builds on Meta Box. Nor is it a visual builder: the page and its fields are defined in code with Meta Box syntax, and the help section is added with the code given in the documentation. If whoever sets it up doesn't touch code, this isn't their tool. It is also meant for you to create the settings screen; it doesn't ship a ready-made one for the end user.
From the admin panel to the Customizer and the multisite network
If your theme needs options in the Customizer, the extension creates panels, sections and settings with minimal configuration. You can keep a settings page in the admin area alongside the Customizer panels, or disable it and keep only the Customizer. Sections can hang under any existing panel. It supports saving options and theme modification data.
On a multisite, it saves you from entering the same settings site by site: you create a network page and it appears in the network admin area with no extra code.
Common questions about Meta Box Settings Page
Can I create more than one settings page?
Yes. You can create unlimited pages and place them wherever you need, as top-level menus or submenus.
Does it work for my theme's options in the Customizer?
Yes, with its own panels, sections and settings. You don't have to learn a separate system.
Do I need to know how to code?
Yes, a little. The configuration is written in code, just like any other Meta Box field.
Tabs or boxes?
It supports both styles. Tabs look like a classic WordPress settings page and boxes show everything on a single screen.
If you already define fields with Meta Box, the learning curve is short
The page's fields are defined the same way as in the rest of Meta Box, so there is no new system to learn. What is worth deciding before you start is the format: tabs or boxes, one or two columns, whether there will be a Customizer version and whether the page should live on the multisite network.
If you want contextual help for your users, also set aside time to write the code for the help section: it doesn't generate itself.
