About Multisite Event Sync for MEC

One calendar, several websites and nobody sure which one is right

When an organization runs several websites (one per venue, city, brand or department), the events calendar ends up duplicated: someone copies the talk onto three sites, someone else changes the time on just one, and a week later visitors see different dates depending on where they look. Multisite Event Sync for MEC is a Modern Events Calendar add-on built on a simple idea: events are managed on a single main site and the subsites inherit them.

The hard part of a distributed calendar is not publishing the event but maintaining it. Last-minute corrections are the first thing to drift out of sync: a room change, a new speaker, a sold-out ticket. Here, every change made on the main site reaches the subsites you have chosen.

What travels from the main site to the subsites

Synchronization covers more than individual events:

  • Events, bookings and tickets: sent from the main site to one or more subsites with one click.
  • MEC shortcodes: the same listings and views across the whole network.
  • Settings, sidebar widgets and single builder templates: so every site looks and behaves the same way.

With automatic live sync, every event, booking and setting is sent right after you update it, with no need to run a full sync each time. From the admin panel you choose which subsites take part, so not every subsite has to receive everything.

Read-only subsites: an advantage with fine print

Synced events cannot be edited on the subsite. This stops anyone from tweaking their copy and leaving it different from the original. The trade-off is organizational: a local manager who spots a typo cannot fix it and has to ask whoever manages the main site. Before building the network, decide who has permissions on the main site and how changes are requested.

Network health dashboard and shared capacity

With several sites, the danger is not noticing that a sync failed. The network health dashboard shows the sync status across all sites, keeps an activity log and lets you retry failed jobs from a single place.

For events with bookings, network booking capacity aggregates capacity and ticket availability across all subsites, so every site reflects the true availability of the whole network and not just its own.

It needs Modern Events Calendar on the network

This plugin is an add-on: it does not work on its own. Here is what it solves and what is up to you:

  • It solves: sending events, bookings, tickets, shortcodes and settings from the main site.
  • It solves: keeping copies free of local changes thanks to read-only mode.
  • It solves: watching for failures and retrying them from the dashboard.
  • You cover: having MEC (Lite or Pro) running, as it is a requirement.
  • You cover: having a main site and the subsites that will receive the events.
  • You cover: deciding who edits on the main site and the individual design of each subsite.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit a synced event on a subsite?

No. Synced events stay read-only on subsites; changes are made on the main site.

Do I have to sync everything manually each time?

No. With automatic sync, every event, booking and setting is sent after each update. You can also launch the sync with one click.

Can I choose which subsites receive the events?

Yes, you select them from the admin panel.

Does it also sync bookings?

Yes, along with events and tickets. Capacity can also be aggregated across the subsites.

Does it work without Modern Events Calendar?

No. It requires MEC Lite or Pro.
