About myCred for User Pro

Building a community with user profiles is easy; the hard part is getting members to do more than sign up. If people on your site follow each other, send messages and visit each other's profiles, that activity already exists, but nobody sees it recognized. myCred for User Pro connects the myCred points system with UserPro profiles so that this interaction has a visible reward.

What isn't seen in a community isn't repeated

In a community, those who contribute don't usually ask what they get out of it: they want to feel that someone noticed. A profile with no sign of activity treats someone who has been taking part for a year the same as someone who joined yesterday. This add-on puts those signals where people look, on the profile itself.

A real walkthrough: from following someone to earning points

Imagine a network of enthusiasts or professionals built with UserPro. Here is how the cycle would work:

  • Step 1, someone follows another member. You can give points for following and also points to the person who gains a follower, so both sides of the action are rewarded.
  • Step 2, that person unfollows. There is a hook to deduct points from whoever unfollows and from whoever loses a follower. It helps keep following and unfollowing from becoming a way to rack up points without effort. Decide carefully whether to use it: deducting can go down badly in a small community.
  • Step 3, private messages are exchanged. There are hooks to reward both the sender and the recipient of a private message. Think about what you want to encourage, because rewarding sending can lead to empty messages just to earn points.
  • Step 4, the profile reflects it. The point balance, rank and badges are inserted into the user's profile, so others see them when they visit it.

Points history with the UserPro shortcode

A user's points history can be displayed through the [userpro] shortcode. It is useful when you want each member to understand where their points come from, which avoids many questions like "why do I have this balance?".

What myCred for User Pro needs to work

It is an add-on, not a standalone plugin: you need myCred, which provides points, ranks and badges, and UserPro, which provides the profiles and the follow system. If your community doesn't use UserPro, there is no point in installing it. It works on both a single site and a multisite installation.

Nor is it a redemption store: it focuses on points for following and for private messages, plus displaying balance, ranks and badges. No other actions, such as comments or posts, are described for this add-on.
