About myCred Progress Bar

A rank you can't see moving stops motivating

Setting up ranks and badges is the easy part of a rewards program. The hard part is making users aware of where they stand, how much is left and why they should come back tomorrow. Without that signal, the system looks like a list of distant prizes and many people stop trying.

myCred Progress Bar puts that signal in plain view: a bar that shows users their progress toward the rank or badge they are chasing. Someone halfway there sees the distance left, and someone who has arrived sees what they have achieved.

What the myCred Progress Bar does with your ranks and badges

It is a myCred add-on, designed for those who already work with its points, ranks and badges system. The flow is short: you install it, set the tracking criteria and the bar starts showing progress.

  • Rank or badge: the bar reflects the user's current rank or their progress toward earning a badge.
  • Multiple colors and types: you can combine colors and choose the bar type.
  • Criteria on your terms: progress is customized according to your users' reference attributes, instead of relying on a single fixed counter.

Where showing progress makes sense and where it is pointless

A bar pays off wherever users must accumulate something to level up. In all of these the intended effect is the same: users see they are close and want to finish.

That also defines the risk. If the thresholds of your ranks are far apart, the bar will sit almost empty for weeks and remind users how far away they are. Before displaying it, check that the first rank or badge can be reached soon, so the bar starts with some progress.

If you don't use ranks or badges, or only award them manually and occasionally, a bar adds nothing: there is no progress to measure.

Is this bar enough, or do you first need to build the myCred system?

The bar only displays. It doesn't create ranks or badges, it doesn't award points and it doesn't define when a reward is earned: all of that is configured in myCred. If you are starting from scratch, you first need your ranks or badges system working, and then add the bar on top.

Does it work without myCred?

No. It is an add-on and needs myCred installed, with the ranks or badges you want to visualize.

What progress can it show?

The user's current rank and their progress toward badges. For any other data you want to measure, check in the demo that the reference attribute you need is available.

Can I change the colors of the bar?

Yes. The bar supports several colors and types.

Does it help motivate new users?

Yes, as long as the first step is reachable. A bar that starts with some progress encourages more than a completely empty one.
