About Newsletter Reports and Retargeting
You send the newsletter and all you know is that it went out
Sending a newsletter without looking at what happens afterwards is like giving a talk with your eyes closed: you don't know who listened, who left or what interested them. For someone who writes a blog it matters more than it seems: the list is your audience, and the subscribers who don't open count as much as the ones who click.
Newsletter Reports and Retargeting is an add-on for the Newsletter plugin that records bounces, opens and clicks, and lets you reuse that behavior to write again to the right people. It doesn't work on its own: it needs the Newsletter plugin.
From the sent campaign to the second chance, step by step
Imagine you run a blog and have just sent the newsletter with your most carefully crafted article of the week. This is how you would use Newsletter Reports and Retargeting:
- First, the totals. You see the audience reached, the opens, the clicks and the errors of the campaign.
- Then, the graphs. They show how many people opened, how many clicked and how many ignored the email.
- Next, the links. You check which ones get the most clicks and find out which topic pulls your readers in, not the one you think they like.
- If you want to drill down to one person, the subscribers panel shows whether their email was delivered, whether they opened it and, if so, whether they clicked.
- To know where they are from, you also need the Geo add-on: without it there is no geolocation. With it you see the activity for each country that shows any, and you can send campaigns focused by location.
- Finally, the retargeting. You add those who clicked, opened or ignored the newsletter to different lists and write to them again with a message designed for that behavior.
What your readers ignore is also an answer
The usual habit is to look only at who clicked. Here the interesting part is also inaction: someone who received the email and didn't open it can go to a separate list for a second send with a different approach. The add-on sorts people by what they did; you write the message.
Four questions about Reports and Retargeting before installing it
Does it work without the Newsletter plugin?
No. It is an add-on built for Newsletter and relies on its campaigns and its subscriber lists.
Can I see what each subscriber did?
Yes. The subscribers panel shows whether the newsletter was delivered, opened and, if so, clicked. You can also see which links were clicked.
Does it include geolocation?
It relies on the Geo add-on. If you don't have it, don't expect data by country or campaigns by location.
What do I do with people who don't open my emails?
You can add them to a different list and contact them again with a dedicated message. What you tell them and when you send it is up to you.
A list you fix campaign after campaign
With the data from several campaigns you can segment your subscribers by behavior. If you only send a newsletter now and then and don't plan to look at the numbers, this add-on won't give you anything. If you publish regularly and want to decide what to write next based on data, here it is.
