About Newsletter - Translatepress

A subscriber signs up in one language and gets the email in another

Translating a blog's pages is only half the job. The other half arrives when someone subscribes: if the form, the messages and the unsubscribe page appear in the wrong language, that person stops reading you or marks the email as spam. And on a multilingual site the list grows with mixed languages without anyone noticing, until sending the same newsletter to everyone no longer makes sense.

Newsletter - Translatepress is an add-on for the Newsletter plugin: it makes Newsletter recognise the languages you manage with TranslatePress and behave as it does with other multilingual plugins, such as WPML or Polylang. It does not work on its own: you need both Newsletter and TranslatePress installed.

A subscriber's journey, step by step

Picture a blog translated into several languages with TranslatePress. This is what changes at each moment:

  • Setup: when you activate the add-on, a language switcher appears in the Newsletter admin area. With it you reach the multilingual configuration sets.
  • Sign-up: the language is taken into account during subscription.
  • Profile editing: when subscribers review or change their details, the experience stays in their language.
  • Unsubscribing: the same applies when cancelling, the moment when a message nobody can understand hurts the most.
  • Lists: the link between languages and Newsletter lists works.

The journey has an important break when you get to writing the newsletter: the Posts block and the automated sending extension do not pull in translated posts. Because of how TranslatePress works, do not expect the newsletter in each language to fill itself with your translated articles.

Common questions before installing Newsletter - Translatepress

Does it work without the Newsletter plugin?

No. It is an add-on for Newsletter and only makes sense if you already use that plugin on a site with TranslatePress.

Does it translate my newsletters?

No. It connects the TranslatePress language with Newsletter's multilingual features (sign-up, unsubscribing, profile and lists). You write the text of each newsletter yourself for each language.

Can I send automated newsletters with translated posts?

Not with this add-on: neither the Posts block nor the automated sending extension pulls in translated content.

Is it fine if I use WPML or Polylang?

This add-on is specific to TranslatePress. If your site uses another multilingual plugin, it is not the one you need.

A 404 on the unsubscribe page usually comes from the language slug

If you see a wrong URL or a 404 error when visiting Newsletter's public page, the profile page or the unsubscribe pages, check the slug of your default language. It may be in the xx_yy format (for example en_gb). Change it to the xx format (en, not en_gb): in the cases observed, it helped. That said, the problem could not be reproduced systematically, so there is no guarantee. Before launching a campaign, sign up yourself in each language and test unsubscribing and the profile page.
