This theme's artificial intelligence runs on your own key
Finishing an article is the most fragile moment of a visit to a digital publication: the reader already got what they came for, and whatever appears next decides whether they stay. Newsreader, by Code Supply Co., is a media theme built around that moment, and its demo installer adds Supercharger and Supercharger Pro, plugins that generate summaries, highlights and recommendations from your own posts.
The theme supplies the widgets, but the AI work is done by the provider you connect. Nothing runs until you add an API key and activate modules. The content of each processed post travels to that provider, and what that costs depends on its terms and on the size of your archive.
Twelve modules so the article is not the end of the visit
- To read better: highlighted paragraphs, pulled quotes, summaries at the top of the article, key moments and key questions.
- To keep reading: recommendations by meaning instead of by category or tag, suggestions inside the text and up-next cards.
- To hold on to those leaving: recirculation in the footer and on exit intent.
- To edit: generated excerpts and an optional label that marks AI-made content.
Supercharger brings highlights, quotes and recommendations; the other nine modules belong to Supercharger Pro, which is not in the theme package. Apart from the AI, Newsreader loads one article after another automatically and closes each post with a Read Next block linking to articles in the same category.
Ads and subscriptions have their own place
- In the post: inside the article and after it, each position with its own settings.
- In archives and other areas: a banner on category pages and the Elementor Banner block.
- Large formats: full-width leaderboard and wallpaper, plus Google AdSense integration.
- Newsletter: Mailchimp, Kit, MailerLite or your own form, and subscribe banners with or without an image.
What stays in your hands after installing it
Consent. Newsreader serves Google Fonts from your server, but the cookie notice and blocking pixels before acceptance fall to a plugin such as Cookie Notice.
Speed. The page score depends on the demo, the server and the content, and some theme features can lower it.
Charging the reader. There is no paywall among its features.
Seven demos and the steps to get them running
The demos are designed by type of publication: Gear, News, Startups, Sports, Auto, City and Media. Activating one installs the plugins it asks for, applies typography, colors, header and footer, and creates a static front page. Your posts, pages and comments are kept, but earlier customization is reset. The Demo Content option adds sample posts, categories and secondary pages; on a site with content, leave it off.
- Upload newsreader.zip under Appearance, Themes, and activate it.
- Install the recommended plugins: Supercharger, Supercharger Pro and Sight. Regenerate Thumbnails is needed if you start from an existing site.
- Choose the demo under Appearance, Theme Demos.
- Add the API key under Supercharger, Settings, API Integration.
- Run the indexing under Supercharger, Tools, and activate the modules you will use.
It integrates with Contact Form 7, Yoast SEO and AMP, and is compatible with Elementor, WPML and RTL.
JNews, SmartMag and Herald to charge or lay out differently
JNews brings together a paywall, content subscriptions and sponsored posts, useful when the reader pays. SmartMag works with Elementor, places ads after a number of paragraphs and detects ad blockers. Herald organizes the front page by sections rather than by date.
AI keys, demos and front page: direct answers
Does the theme work without an AI key?
Yes. Only the Supercharger modules stay inactive.
Which AI providers does it accept?
Generation can use OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek or OpenRouter. Semantic indexing always uses OpenAI, so recommendations by meaning require that key.
Does generation slow the pages the reader sees?
It runs in the background through WordPress scheduled tasks, never on page load, and the result is cached per post.
Do I need Elementor?
The theme's nine own blocks are for Elementor, among them Hero, Carousel, Posts and Banner.
