About Paid Memberships Pro - AWeber Add On
Your email list and your member list are not the same list
Anyone who charges for a membership usually ends up with two lists: members in WordPress and subscribers in AWeber. They get copied by hand, with CSV exports, and they are always out of sync: someone signs up and never gets the welcome email, or changes level and stays on the wrong list. And what you lose is not just time: people who pay expect different things from people who only subscribed, and with a single list there is no way to treat them differently.
Paid Memberships Pro - AWeber Add On connects the two: when a user registers, they are added to the AWeber lists you have assigned to their membership level. It fits paid newsletters and blog and news sites best, where email is the product or the main channel with the reader.
How Paid Memberships Pro - AWeber Add On sorts your members
From Settings > PMPro AWeber you authorize your app with AWeber and then choose the lists: some for all users and others for each membership level. You can select several lists at once by holding CTRL (or Cmd on Mac) while clicking each one.
An example of use: the basic level goes into the general list and the premium level goes into the general list and into another one just for paying subscribers. The add on is designed for sites where a member can hold one or more active levels at the same time.
Without membership levels, everyone goes in the same bucket
If Paid Memberships Pro is not installed, the add on can sync all WordPress users with one or more lists, but without telling them apart. Segmentation by level, which is what justifies using it on a membership site, requires PMPro to be installed and active.
It does not work in a local or offline environment either: it needs a live site to talk to AWeber. If you want to test it before launching, do it on a staging site reachable from the internet.
Emails and sequences are built in AWeber, not in WordPress
This add on is just a bridge. Here is what it covers and what is up to you:
- Already solved: adding the user to AWeber lists according to their membership level.
- Already solved: assigning several lists to all users or to each level.
- Already solved: authorizing your AWeber account from the WordPress dashboard.
- You cover it in AWeber: writing and sending the emails, and setting up autoresponders or welcome sequences.
- You cover it in AWeber: having your own AWeber account with the lists already created.
- You cover it with code: sending extra member data to AWeber, using the pmpro_aweber_custom_fields filter.
- You check it yourself: what happens to a member when their level is cancelled or expires. Test it with a sample user before opening the site to the public, so you know whether you need to clean up lists some other way.
Questions before connecting AWeber
Can I test it on my computer?
No. It only works on a live site, not on a local or offline installation.
Can a member be on several lists at once?
Yes. For all users and for each level you can select several lists with CTRL or Cmd.
Can I send AWeber more data than the email address?
Yes, but it takes code: the add on offers the pmpro_aweber_custom_fields filter to change the fields sent when the user is added. There is no visual setting for it.
Do I need Paid Memberships Pro?
To sort members by their level, yes. Without it, you can only sync all users with the same lists.
