About Paid Memberships Pro - Email Templates Add On
When a member pays and the next thing they get is a generic email, with a dry subject line and text that doesn't sound like your brand, the relationship cools right when it matters most. Paid Memberships Pro sends automatic emails, and this add on lets you rewrite them your way from the WordPress dashboard.
For those who live off renewals and want every notice to sound like their brand
It suits you if you already use Paid Memberships Pro and want control over what your member reads when they pay, cancel, renew or when a charge fails. It also fits you if the administrator needs to receive notices with different recipients or with a copy to a colleague.
It won't suit you if you are looking for an email marketing tool. There are no campaigns, newsletters or welcome sequences here: you only edit the transactional emails the plugin already sends. It also doesn't work without Paid Memberships Pro, because these are its templates. And if you build your sequences on another email platform, you can disable the equivalent notice here so the member doesn't get two messages.
The money emails are the ones that keep members
In a membership business everyone takes care of the welcome email. The ones almost nobody reviews are those about money, and they decide whether the member stays: the charge that failed, the reminder before renewal, the notice that the membership is expiring. Cold or confusing text at those moments turns into cancellations that could have been avoided.
The templates cover these groups:
- Sign-up (checkout): paid, free, and check or manual payment, each with its administrator version.
- Account changes: membership change by the administrator, cancellation, expired membership and membership about to expire.
- Payments and billing: billing information updated, cancelled auto-renewals, payment action required, payment failure, recurring payment receipt, recurring payment reminder and refund.
Many have a copy addressed to the administrator, so you can adjust separately what the member sees and what you see.
Subject, recipients and body: what you change in each template
From Memberships > Settings > Email Templates you pick a template and edit the subject, the recipients (including CC and BCC) and the body. The body is written in the standard WordPress editor, in visual or text mode, so it works like editing a post.
Keep in mind that the editor changes the content, not the overall design of the emails. For a uniform look you will have to take care of the HTML of each template yourself.
Test, switch off and go back in Paid Memberships Pro Email Templates
Each template has three controls that prevent surprises:
- Test email: you enter your address and save and send. The template variables may not fill in correctly in the test, and that doesn't mean the template is broken. The reliable check is the email log with real sends.
- Disable: a checkbox stops that email from being sent. Avoid turning off the invoice and expiration ones, which are the ones the member needs.
- Reset: returns subject, recipients and body to the default text. It can't be undone, so copy your version first if you want to keep it.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work without Paid Memberships Pro?
No. These are that plugin's templates and you need it installed.
Can I send newsletters or campaigns with this?
No. It only edits the automatic membership emails: sign-ups, cancellations, expirations, payments and refunds.
Can I copy someone else in?
Yes, each template lets you set recipients, with CC and BCC.
What happens if I make a mistake while editing?
You can reset the template to the default text, but that change can't be undone.
