About PeepSo Core: Chat
Private messages are where a community breaks without anyone seeing it
On a community's activity feed everything is in plain sight: if someone insults another member, others see it, someone reports it and the moderator acts. In private messages there are no witnesses. That is where harassment, unsolicited selling and the member who writes to everyone who has just signed up arrive. And you almost always find out late, when the person affected has already left.
PeepSo Core: Chat adds private messages and real-time chat to a PeepSo community. What is worth looking at before enabling it is not how people chat, but which limits you can set on who writes to whom.
From private message to group conversation
- Private messages and real-time chat, with chat windows and a messages page of its own.
- Group conversations: several recipients are chosen when creating the message and they all receive it in the same conversation.
- Attachments: images, files, GIFs, moods and emojis.
- Search of messages by content or by user.
- Per-conversation options: add people, turn off read receipts, mute or leave it.
- Notifications on the site itself and by email when replies arrive.
The settings that decide who can write to whom
Messages between friends only. With this option, the chat button on a profile only appears to that user's friends. That way a stranger cannot open a conversation from the profile. Bear in mind that each member can change it in their profile, so it is a starting point, not a closed rule.
Character limit per message. It caps the length of each message, which helps if someone starts pasting the same long text to many members.
Where the chat appears. You can show chat windows only on certain pages or remove them from others. On a site that mixes community and shop, taking them out of checkout avoids distractions.
Email frequency. The first message in a conversation always triggers an email; the following ones, at the frequency you set.
Photos, GIPHY and a refresh that adds server load
It needs PeepSo. It is part of PeepSo and does not add chat to a site that does not use it. Some attachments depend on other pieces: photos, on the PeepSo photos plugin, and GIFs, on configuring GIPHY.
Forced refresh sends an extra request every 30 seconds so messages stay synchronised across windows and devices. With many members connected at once, that is a lot of requests to the server: enable it if your users miss it, not by default.
And when the chat is minimised a sound plays with every new message, with no setting to turn it off either in the admin panel or in the profile.
Limits first, then the announcement to the community
When enabled it creates a new page in WordPress, called Messages by default, at the /messages address and with the peepso_messages shortcode.
- Turn on chat with its master switch in the PeepSo configuration.
- Decide whether messages are for friends only and set a character limit.
- Choose on which pages the chat windows appear.
- Adjust the frequency of the notification emails.
- Test a group conversation with two accounts before announcing it to the community.
Per-member limits or a chat outside PeepSo
The base of it all is PeepSo. If you want to decide what each member can do based on their role, how complete their profile is or their membership, PeepSo User Limits is made for that. Outside PeepSo, Wise Chat Pro keeps messages in your database and brings rooms, a word filter and prior approval. Better Messages also integrates with PeepSo, and its voice messages add-on adds voice notes to its chat, with Better Messages installed.
Strangers, files and the sound that stays on
Does it work without PeepSo?
No. It is PeepSo's chat and needs the community installed.
Can group chats be created?
Yes. When creating a new message several recipients are chosen and they all receive it in the same conversation.
Can I stop strangers from writing?
You can limit messages to friends, although each member can change that setting in their profile.
Can files be sent?
Yes: images, files, GIFs, moods and emojis.
Can the message sound be turned off?
There is no setting to turn it off, either in the admin panel or in the profile.
Which page does it create?
A Messages page at /messages with the peepso_messages shortcode.
