About PMPRO Member Badges Addon
For those who want each member's level visible in the directory, not just in their account
You have membership levels, but inside your site every member looks the same: the one who has been on the top level for years appears just like the one who joined yesterday. A status nobody sees does not let anyone show off, nor does it encourage anyone to move up a level.
A badge only makes sense when other members see it: on a profile, in a directory or in a community area. It is not for you if:
- You do not have Paid Memberships Pro installed and active: it is an add-on and does not work on its own.
- You want activity achievements, points or rankings: the badge is assigned by level, one image for each.
- You expect non-members to see some badge: by default they have none. You can define a fallback one with a filter, but that already means code.
One image per level, uploaded where you already edit the level
In each level's settings, inside «Other Settings», there is an image field: you upload the file or paste the full URL. PNG, SVG or JPG all work, so you can use your own designs with your site's branding.
If you have no designs, the plugin comes with a small set of starter badges, free of rights. There are only a few: meant to get you started, not to cover a ladder of ten levels. Before designing your own, check that they stay recognizable at a small size, which is how they will appear in a listing.
PMPRO Member Badges Addon on a page, in a widget or in a template
There are two ways to display the badge. The simplest is the [pmpro_member_badges] shortcode, which works in posts, pages and widgets. It accepts these parameters, all optional:
- image_align: alignleft, alignright, aligncenter or any image class from your theme.
- level_id: shows the badge of a specific level.
- size: a single number that limits height and width.
- title: a text used as a heading; if you set it, the badge appears in the card format used by PMPro's other elements.
- user_id: shows the badge of a specific user.
The other way is the pmpromb_show_badge() function, for PHP templates. It accepts a user_id, an echo parameter (set to false it returns the badge instead of printing it) and an array of arguments with level_id and size. This route requires editing theme files or a child theme.
Member directory: the badge as one more field
To get the most out of it in the directory and on profiles, add the pmpro_member_badge element to the elements attribute of the directory shortcode, for example: elements=display_name;pmpro_member_badge.
If a member has several active levels, the badges for all of them are shown. Think about the layout: two or three images in a row take up more space than one, so set a reasonable size.
What people usually ask before adding badges to members
Can I assign a different badge to each level?
Yes, one image per level, which you upload when editing the level itself.
What happens with someone who has more than one level?
The shortcode and the function show the badges for all of their active levels.
Can I show another user's badge?
Yes: both the shortcode and the function accept a user_id.
