About PMPRO Nav Menus Addon

One menu for the visitor who is still deciding and the member who already pays

On a membership site, the top menu is usually built for the visitor: Pricing, Features, Contact. But once someone is a member, those links get in the way, and what they actually want (their courses, their content, their account) is buried. The result is a menu that doesn't fully serve either group.

The key is that someone visiting your site and someone paying for it need different paths, and the menu is the first thing they see. PMPRO Nav Menus Addon changes the menu depending on who the person is: visitor, registered user without a level, or member.

How PMPRO Nav Menus Addon changes the menu by user

There are two ways to use it, and the right one depends on your theme:

  • By theme location: the plugin duplicates every menu location your theme offers and creates two new versions: one for members (any level) and one for registered users without a level. Under Appearance > Menus > Manage Locations you assign a menu to each.
  • By specific level: in each membership level's settings, under Other Settings, you tick the box for a dedicated navigation menu. Then you create that level's menu and assign it to the new location.
  • With a widget: PMPro - Custom Membership Menu can be placed in any widget area. It supports one menu for members, another for registered users without a level and, by expanding a link, a different one for each active level.

If you don't assign a menu to one of the new locations, your theme's menu for that location is displayed. That way you only customize what matters to you.

The limits you should know about

It works with classic or hybrid themes. With a block theme or a page builder such as Elementor, the duplicated locations are not the way to go: you'll need a different approach to get a conditional main menu. It also requires Paid Memberships Pro to be installed and active, and doesn't work on its own. Menus must be created beforehand in Appearance > Menus, because the widget only lets you choose from menus that already exist. And it isn't a content editor: it only changes which menu is shown, it doesn't restrict access to pages.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if a member has more than one level?

The plugin includes a filter to set the priority between levels and decide which menu is shown. It's a setting for developers, so keep it in mind if you use multiple levels per user.

Can it help steer free users toward a paid level?

Yes. Registered users without a level can see a menu with links to the paid options, which is very useful in a funnel with a free tier.

Does it work with a block theme?

The duplicated locations are designed for classic or hybrid themes. With block themes you'll need another route.

Plan your menus before touching anything

Before installing, sketch on paper how many menus you need: visitor, registered without a level, general member and, if needed, one per level. Every level with its own menu adds one more location to maintain, so don't enable it on all of them if the members' menu is enough.

Menus first, locations afterwards

The practical order is to create the menus in Appearance > Menus, then assign them in Manage Locations or in the widget, and check by logging in with test accounts of each type. Check in your theme's demo whether the duplicated locations appear where you expect, especially if your header uses several menus.
