About PMPRO Proration Addon

A plan change is when members scrutinize the invoice

A member who wants to move from a monthly plan to an annual one, or from a high tier to a cheaper one, always asks the same question: how much will I be charged now? Paid Memberships Pro does not calculate prorations by default, so each site ends up handling these cases by hand.

PMPRO Proration Addon gives each case a clear answer at checkout itself.

What PMPRO Proration Addon calculates when a level changes, and where it stops

The add-on calls an upgrade any change where the prorated amount is greater than zero, and a downgrade any change where it is zero or less. Depending on the case, it does this:

  • Same billing period (monthly to monthly, for example): it charges based on the days left in the period and the prices of the old and new levels. The recurring payment date stays the same and the subscription changes to charge the new amount.
  • Different period (monthly to annual): it charges the initial payment of the new level minus a credit calculated from the days remaining and the subtotal of the last order. The recurring date resets: one payment period of the new level from the day of checkout.
  • Delayed downgrade: nothing is charged at that moment. The member keeps access until the end of the period already paid, then moves to the lower level and payments for that level begin.
  • One or several active levels: it works on sites where a member can hold a single level or more than one.

It is worth knowing the limits beforehand. It has no settings screen. It only prorates within level groups that allow one level per group (the classic tiered setup) and only when the change removes another level; in groups that let members pick several levels at once, it does not prorate. And it does not pay out balances: if the calculation comes out negative, the member pays nothing but the leftover credit is lost (in the examples below it would have been $2.50 or $312.50).

Six plan changes and the amount charged

ChangePoint in the cycleCharge
From $5/month to $10/monthDay 15 (halfway through the cycle)$2.50, immediate upgrade
From $250/year to $500/yearMonth 3 (a quarter of the cycle)$187.50, immediate upgrade
From $10/month to $5/monthDay 15$0, downgrade at the end of the month
From $500/year to $250/yearMonth 3$0, downgrade at the end of the year
From $10/month to $200/yearDay 1$190, immediate upgrade
From $10/month to $200/yearDay 15$195, immediate upgrade

In the last two cases the renewal date resets to one year from checkout.

Frequently asked questions about PMPRO Proration Addon

Does it refund money when a member downgrades?

No. The add-on does not prorate below zero. Instead of a refund or a credit, it delays the downgrade until the period the member already paid for ends.

Does it work for moving from monthly to annual?

Yes. The initial payment of the new level is charged minus the credit for the unused time, and the next renewal comes one year after checkout.

Can I change the calculation rules?

It implements the most common rules and allows customization with code, including the definition of what counts as a downgrade. If your pricing model is very particular, you will need someone who can program.

Does it work without Paid Memberships Pro?

No. It is an add-on for that plugin and needs it installed and active.

The rules are adjusted with code, not with a panel

Every membership site has its own idea of what a fair proration is, and the add-on accepts that: it applies a general rule and leaves action and filter hooks for anyone who wants to modify it. Those hooks allow, for example, redefining what counts as a downgrade. If you don't code, stick with the default rules and check that they fit your prices.

For changes between levels with the same period, there can be differences of one or two days in the payment date because months have different lengths.

Once activated it prorates right away, so test each type of change first

You need Paid Memberships Pro installed and active. Since there are no settings, as soon as you activate the add-on checkout starts showing prorated amounts. Before opening it to your members, simulate three changes in a test environment: an upgrade within the same period, a jump from monthly to annual and a downgrade. Also check that your level groups allow one level per group, because otherwise proration will not apply.
