About PMPRO Reason for Cancelling Addon
When a member leaves, you almost never hear from them again
A member cancels and disappears: they don't answer later surveys, they don't open your follow-up email, and you're left guessing whether it was the price, the content or a charge they didn't expect. The only moment they have your site open and are paying attention to it is when they leave. PMPRO Reason for Cancelling Addon takes advantage of exactly that moment.
Whoever sells memberships tends to think about winning sign-ups and treats cancellation as a mere formality. But every cancellation without an explanation is an unanswered question about your offer, and that information can't be recovered later.
A required field on the cancellation page
Once the add on is activated, the Paid Memberships Pro cancel membership page shows a text box called "Reason". The member must fill it in before they can finish cancelling. There are no configuration steps: the field simply appears.
- The reason is required, not optional: the cancellation can't be completed with the field empty.
- It is stored in the database and linked to each member.
- It is designed for sites where a member can hold one or several active levels.
The reason reaches your inbox and stays on the member's profile
The text the member writes is added by default to the cancellation emails, both the one the member receives and the one the administrator receives. If you customize those templates in Memberships > Settings > Email Templates, use the !!reason!! variable to place the reason in the exact spot in the message.
In addition, site administrators can see each member's history of reasons in a panel on the Edit Member screen.
Is a free text box enough to understand why people cancel?
This add on collects a written answer and stores it. Nothing more. It offers no predefined options to choose from, it is not a multi-step survey, and it doesn't offer discounts or alternatives to keep the member. Nor does it sort the reasons: reading them and spotting patterns is up to you. If your volume of cancellations is small or medium, that is usually enough and more revealing than a closed list; if you need statistics by category, it will fall short.
Do I need anything else installed?
Yes: it is a Paid Memberships Pro add on and needs that plugin installed and activated. On its own it does nothing.
Can I decide where the reason appears in the email?
Yes. Edit the cancellation email template and include !!reason!! wherever you want it to appear. If you don't touch it, the reason is already included in the default emails.
Does it work if my members have several levels?
It is designed for sites where members can hold one or more active levels.
The field doesn't show on the cancellation page, what should I check?
Start by ruling out conflicts with other plugins, especially learning management (LMS) plugins such as LearnPress. In those cases it is usually fixed by using a code snippet to delay the filter that inserts the field.
